How can it only be 9 am and how can it only be Sunday? Our check-in is 4 pm and while the early check-in was offered, an extra $100 for an inferior room did not appeal. We also have to stay awake to avoid jetlag and being anywhere need a pillow would be irresistible. Even on a Sunday, the city is in your face. It's skyscrapers beyond high-rises. The steam rises out of the drains and manhole covers and the smell of the city gets right into your nostrils. A quick bite at a patisserie and we make our way to Grand Central station. From The Untouchables to Gossip Girl, we all have film references to the impressive main concourse of Grand Central Station. We keep moving and stroll past the New York Public Library and ... read more

Frank Sinatra's famous lyrics "if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere!" takes on a different meaning to travelers from down under. I have no idea how many hours we were in transit, but I'm going to estimate 30. It's all a bit foggy. I know we left Brisbane on the 1st of April around10pm and we in Newark at around 8 am on the 2nd of April. The longest 12 hours ever! It's been a long haul between long hauls and we were nervously excited all day. Saturday already felt long while we waited for our late night flight time, but it had only just begun. Apart from the additional post pandemic administration requirements at check-in, the airport wait was the best wait ever! Jules (the points whisperer) had weaved her Qantas ... read more

Eagles, Life in the Fast Line; Doobie Brothers, Without Love; Fleetwood Mac, Bowie, Van Halen, Toto, Beatles, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix, Elton John, Santana, Pink Floyd5 this band can do it all. I even got up, not on the dance floor, and moved to the beat. If I were sixty years younger and single lol I could be a groupie for this group. They are not only great musicians, but also seem to friends. Forget the rocking seas, the foggy days, the aching back, good music heals all. The little bird lives. It has been identified as a European Robin. Someone reported fresh bird poop so I’m hopeful it will land safely like so many immigrants in the past. Today, the 25th, is sunny with calm seas. Plan to sit on my deck chair and pretend ... read more

I finally called Avis to ask about any compensation about the vibration issue with the car and they explained I should have just exchanged it during the rental but thought I’d ask anyway and they agreed to give me a 1 day rental coupon to use in the next 12 months but when the email arrived shortly afterwards it was only for $30- and can only be used in USA. They also confirmed that in relation to the toll I’d only be charged the toll free of around $2.00 plus small change. Today is our last day in NYC so we have planned a lazy day as we’ve ticked off the main things we wanted to do so today is all about enjoying the food ! I was keen for one last diner experience so we ... read more

Another good night sleep with little noise which is surprising here in NYC as during the daytime you do hear lots of ambulances and fire truck sirens going off. Our hotel has 4 apartments per floor and we face the back of the building and there is a view of a courtyard where we can see the back of the buildings beside and behind us on the next block so I think the buildings around us are blocking out a lot of the ambient sound so that is good. Kerry got in trouble from the breakfast host lady when trying to put some bread in the toaster without using tongs (naughty). It is weird given everyone is touching the tongs and other items like the fridge door to get the yoghurts etc. and I tried later ... read more

Today we had one objective and that was to go to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum at the old World Trade Centre site. We had tried to do this when we were here in NYC on a previous visit but we were unable to secure tickets so this time we made sure to buy our tickets online yesterday and we paid a bit extra for the 90 minutes tour of both the memorial and the museum which would start at midday. We caught the train down to the end of the subway line at World Trade Centre which was a short walk from the memorial and I saw a sign saying “Oculus this way” and I had a recollection that the Oculus was something important to visit so off I go and indeed it is an ... read more

Woke up around 9.00am and it was nice to know after a 16 day road trip we did not need to check out or a hotel or drive the car anywhere. Breakfast was pretty basic in a tiny room downstairs being 2 slices of toast with cream cheese and a strawberry yoghurt. Spent the rest of the morning chilling in the room and updating the blog as I’m a few days behind now. We have noticed this hotel only has 1 small lift that fits about 4 people at the most to cater for a 7 storey building so one has to be patient waiting for the elevator. We left the room around 11.00am and walked up E48th Street past the Rockefeller Centre which will soon have its famous Christmas Tree installed and saw people roller ... read more

Breakfast today was very ordinary at the hotel with the options very limited, but no real drama as I was not really hungry anyway so I just had the cream cheese on some stale bread and a raspberry yoghurt. The drive to Manhattan looked pretty clear of traffic and was scheduled to take us a tick under 2 hours being a Saturday (no commuters on the road) and we went via the Tacoma Parkway which was a lovely drive through the hills with plenty of fall foliage and no trucks allowed. It was amazing that we saw no buildings at all or any signs of sighting New York City until we were only about 20 km away. Google maps suggested a late route change which worked out well to avoid some congestion heading onto Manhattan Island ... read more

It has been a while since posting on this platform. This was always my 'basic' keep friends informed channel. The special quality of this site in particular was that it always seemed to be active and accessible in China and worked relatively well. My Sakya Resource Guide (SRG) website from the early 1990s is gone. The internet host company went out of business, or changed, and dumped all websites. I had something on Google BlogSpot for awhile but it was not available in China - http://jeffwatt.blogspot.com/ - so I didn't continue with it. It still has some content as I was looking to merge some SRG functions with it. Of course, currently HAR is also posting on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook, aside from Himalayan Art Resources (HAR). As of last September, 2021, HAR has an account ... read more

Today is Wednesday and alarm was set for 6.15am but we woke up early anyway. We were on track by doing the online check out from Paris Hotel to save some extra time and we were out the front of the Hotel by 7.00am as planned to get a Taxi. The weather was a bit different this morning as a thunderstorm has arrived with a bit of rain and lots of lightning (not ideal for flying on a plane). Our Taxi ride to the airport was smooth and took about 15-20 minutes Our driver has been living in Las Vegas since 1972 and in his words “bigger is not always better”. We had a few final views of the strip and saw the new massive sphere building that will be an exciting new Las Vegas addition ... read more
