We arrived in NY NY at 1:30pm Saturday 26th June via JFK airport and had an abrupt introduction to traffic at it's worst. JFK is only 30k from Manhattan but the trip to our hotel took 3 hours!!! It was amazing and I think the only road rule is 'don't stop'! The Quality Hotel on Broadway is a misnomer - aka is there is NO quality. (Robyn don't be offended, just don't recommend it to anyone else). Two nights later we checked into the HI hostel 10 blocks North on Amsterdam Avenue. It was very clean and comfortable, just lacked a kitchen for us to prepare meals. So we ate out for every meal, mostly Sushi and fruit. Day 2, Sunday was brunch and some fine Jazz at the Blue Note restaurant and jazz bar in ... read more

The time has come... To dance down 5th avenue. Rob and I had planned on going to watch the parade, and as we stood on the footpath watching the parade go past two of Rob's mates spotted us and before we knew we were in it, dancing with some the sexiest men I have ever seen, in some of the best dresses. There is something very liberating and entirely surreal about dancing through the streets of New York to the beat of the Brasilian drums surrounded by the fanfare of mardi gra. It was brilliant. ... the photos tell the story. ... read more

I've now arrived at the New York hostel, after an epic 17 hour journey, to find my road trip compadres are all missing presumed lost! Unless they turn up soon I'm going to have to brave the dodgy looking pizza restaurant over the road alone. New York is exactly how you'd expect. Yellow cabs, apartment buildings with fire escapes bolted on the side, fat people... I expected this but I am still surprised at just how familiar it all feels - as if I've lived here half my life. Tomorrow the sight-seeing begins in earnest.... read more

I love New York. Each day I wake up with a long list of things to do but each day, despite my best efforts to stay focused, I keep on getting distracted and wander down side streets. I end up seeing eveything and nothing.... Friday I tried to get tickets to see Shakespeare in the Park, after waiting for 2 hours in the heat of the day they gave the last ticket to the person standing 3 people ahead of me in the queue. Shrugging it off, went to meet up with Rob at the Grand Central Station. For those of you who have never been there it is a totally awesome station with the star consellations painted on the roof (reminiscent of the sistene chapel) what makes it even more impressive is the fact that ... read more

So much time has passed and what a change from Costa Rica!!! After the flights and delays I finally got to La Guardia at around 2.30am, by then a pretty deserted airport. With luck not really on my side, my backpack lost somewhere between Atlanta and New York, the SuperShuttle not turning up for another 2 hours I decided I would rather pay 40 dollars for a cab than wait! I wanted to get to my sister's place ASAP so that I would FINALLY be able to get some sleep. It was great to see my sister and her boyfriend Floris who had been visiting that week. The much-needed sleep was great and I felt a whole lot better the next morning. We had a tasty brunch near to Columbia University, and I was enjoying people ... read more

Hi all! Sitting here in Kennedy Airport I'm about an hour and a half till departure. I will fly approximately ten hours to Moscow, go through customs there (with my visa- yay!) and fly a few hours later to St. Petersburg, where I will study for six weeks. I'm hoping I can really activate my Russian-- and of course increase it, though I will have to work to make sure I take linguistic "risks" and don't just be the quietly unobtrusive one hanging out and asking simple questions. I will be visiting museums as often as I can. I also intend to find out soon if I can get a library card to work on my reading skills and hopefully memorise some poetry. I'll try to take lots of pictures and write descriptive entries. For now, ... read more

Last American Post. It's 4:30 am on the day I leave and I'm packing and repacking and rerepacking. It's madness. I'm wired and exhausted like the tail end of a guarana pill. Crap! I can hear birds chirping. And Polish Hip Hop. I'm not sure which distresses me more. Today Howie and I were maxin out in the pool and the Sam, the family German Shepard, took off after a chipmunk and bagged it. He climbed out of the pool and slid it on to a shovel and tossed it over the fence. He chuckled and said, "He's not coming back. And if he does, I'm outta here." I have been looking at my reflection way too much these last few days. I'm listening to the sound of my voice, feeling the rate of my breath, ... read more
