Well heeled
Louboutins at the shoe dept. in Bergdorfs I always hear that great Bobbie Darin song: "New York on Sunday, big city takin' a nap...." when I'm here over a weekend. The vibe here is completely different on a Sunday, especially later in the day when a good number of tourists have packed up and New Yorkers indulge in a day off. Going for brunch/lunch/lupper/cocktails is an all-day affair - the cafes and restos were bulging with people taking advantage of the good weather. But not for me - I had work to do. Up with the birds and off to the Essex Hotel on Central Park West to meet up with the press pack for the Sex and the City press conference. Unlike the usual deal - a long table in a hotel ballroom - the cast marched into the shoe department at ultra-chic and mind numbingly expensive Bergdorf Goodman. The cheapest pair of Louboutins in the joint were $575, I kid you not.
Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, Chris Noth and writer/director Michael Patrick King sat among the Louboutins and Jimmy Choos and YSL heels and took questions. More on that in the Star and at the star.com, she wrote, endlessly plugging.
As
Hockey day in NYC
Found these lads playing shinny on a playground at Houston St. we were waiting for the cast to arrive, the very nice sales lady offered to let me try on a pair of Loubous - and why not? I've never slid my tootsies into one of them. My choice was a pair of lipstick red patent spike heels - they had to be six inches. And the pricetag was $975. I stepped into the legendary shoes and guess what? They hurt. I couldn't walk in them if you paid me. Thank heavens. Would have to have fallen in love with them.
By mid afternoon, I was free to hit the streets of Manhattan again, so I hopped the subway to Chelsea to check out New York Vintage on West 25th. It's THE vintage store in New York and lots of clothes from here have been used in SATC episodes and the movies - and yes, the love it/hate it blue bird headpiece from the first movie's wedding scene came from there. It's like a museum inside - frightfully expensive, but looking costs nada.
A late lunch at an Italian place on 7th Avenue and a lot of wandering later (my aching feet soothed with a quickie pedicure at SpaBelles) I ended up in the Meat Packing district where a cocktail seemed like an ideal idea. I met these two ladies at The Standard Grill who were drinking a punch-bowl sized cocktail for 2 (or 6). They'd just graduated as pastry chefs, so they had something to celebrate. I also stumbled (literally, the streets are all uneven cobbles and I had just had a cocktail after all) on an enthusiastic outdoor festival with a inordinate amount of shirtless men. As a reporter, I felt the need to investigate. Turns out it was a Bear Fair - a day devoted to furry and fabulous gay men. Another couple of hours of wandering and checking out storefronts and people watching and I was back to the hotel for a couple hours work and then a late supper at Les Halles, which was just around the corner. Steak frites and a glass of red and I was ready for slumber. Back to Toronto Monday and a long day - and night - at the office.
Thanks for coming to NY with me kids!
