Breakfast
not only the street workers were happy with these portions! Going to sleep at four in the morning, getting up at six a.m. and still being able to sleep in is great! We had to remember to turn the clock back six hours. Our only day in NY, thanx to KLM, was to be the very best we could make of it. It turned out to be better...
We started with breakfast, what else? Just down the avenue at the corner of 35th Street we found this very NY place. Sitting between builders and street workers we enjoyed our watery coffee, egg wraps and ham steak to loud, classic music. We found out that the owner, a small smiley woman with Asian roots, was playing her sons music, a successful musician.
Time to find out where we were and where we were going to. Actually NY was quite easy to orientate in. The Avenues are long and are crossed by the shorter streets, all numbered logically. Every now and then came a tube station with easy to follow directions: uptown or downtown, east side or west side. It was fun getting around and the metro card for one day has a reasonable price. First things first: Off to the
Art Deco interior
inside the Empire State. Empire State building. We could see this magnificent tower right in front of our hotel window. A big fan of architectural design in the early 20th century and Art Deco interior as we are, this was what we were most looking forward to. But New York is a dream come true for any such fan!!! So we ventured up to the 86th floor, yes it was very windy and cold. But we were so lucky! We had fantastic weather, sunny, blue sky, not a cloud in sight! The interior was beautiful, just as my villa should look like 😊 The view was breathtaking! We spent as long as we could up in the windy cold watching the waking city beneath. A very special moment.
86 floors deeper we were prepared to take our first ride with the tube. We got into the red line, no. 1 going down town. Our destination: Wallstreet.
We were quite surprised to find out, during our entire time in NY, that New Yorkers are actually extremely friendly! I'm sure I heard otherwise before. We were asked if we needed help and people just came up chatting away about god and the world. It was
Says it all
I want that door matt, I'd actually like the building to go with it too! great fun and we made it down town safe. No wonder the city is cold and windy. When we had made our way through the high marvelous buildings, down Wallstreet, through the impressive Financial Quarter, to the seaport we got the first glimpse of sun on the ground. And it was actually warm! Well, not as freezing as between the cold brick valleys.
We were on our way to the Helicopter port, near Brooklyn Bridge. There we met Metal Keith 😊 Hey Keith! Keith, a nice guy and great Metal fan from New York. Showed us that American Metal can be cool too and NY has great underground Metal potential. We spent a bit of time chatting and listening to some music on his iPod and promised to send an email when we're back. Next time NY, he'll take us to some insider places, we'll take him by his word!
Helicopter time! I still can't believe that Olly got into the Helicopter!! It was so cool! We saw entire NY, the Statue of Liberty and all. We swooshed over the city with our blonde, very typical looking pilot and had blue sky and clear view. It was simply
In the lift
and me grinning stupid... amazing!
After Olly got back on his feat and wasn't as green anymore we went down to Pier 17 where we could watch everyday life on the docks, see the ships and yachts sailing by and enjoy a coffee.
