East River Leg

Oct 31. Oyster Bay, NY to Atlantic Highlands, NJ
East River Leg.

At 1341 we got underway again and went under Throngs Neck Bridge which marks the entrance to the East River.
At 1350 we went under Bronx Whitestone Bridge and got closer to NYC skyline.
At 1403 we were at the anchorage channel which was pretty slow and just a few boats this time of the year and shortly after we were going under two world famous magnificent bridges:

Manhattan Bridge.

And Brooklyn Bridge.

At 1421 we were going under a third magnificent bridge: The Verrazano.
At 1706 we picked up speen because we didn’t want to run out of day light, turned to 274º cut from West Bank to Old Orchard Shoal. But then we realized that we would be more protected from the Tropical Storm Noel close to the Sandy Hook on the Jersey Shore.
At 1734 at 40º28’48”N 074º02’43”W we turned to 149º and passed the intersection towards Horse Shoe Cove, NJ along Sandy Hook, NJ.
At 1800 we entered Horse Shoe Cove. The sand of the edge is being washed into the Cove making some spots really shallow and we prop washed a little sand. It got tricky but Vitto’s ability and the depth sounder helped us find a spot to anchor.
We dropped the hook at 40º 26’46”N 074º59’54”W at 1817.
The area was very open and unprotected for us to wait out the storm for a couple of days.
After supper we got underway towards Atlantic Highlands on NJ shore and at 1930 we moved to 40º26’2”N 074º2’7”W and picked up a mooring. This is a better protected anchorage with good moorings off the Atlantic Highlands Municipal Basin.
We did 53 nm today.
