Boy oh boy it's hot. About 37 but feels 47 with the overwhelming NYC humidity.
Day 7
We knew this was coming so spent monday doing out door things - we walked around Brooklyn Heights, had lunch at a GREAT Diner, ribs and buffalo wings servedwith biscuts! We noted that a "slice" in this part of town - that is a huge slice of plain cheese pizza costs 99c, but an apple costs more than a dollar. We then walked over the Brooklyn bridge in to town. Though it was 24 degrees it felt like 34, and the heat of the day here peaks at about 6pm and remains hot over night. Brooklyn Heights was much more like Harlem than I thought it would be. By the time we got back from the city we were all worn out simply from the heat - thank goodness we have aircondidtioning.
Day 8
Today was hotter than yesterday by about 13 degrees - it didn't cool down at all over night. I'm glad this has happened now and not earlier in the week. My brain is now in cruise/disney mode so lots of time on line figuring out the finer
details!
We went to the Top of the Rock (rockefeller) centre today - it looks down on the Empire State building so we decided to skip the ESB. it was very very hazy but still spectacular - and mostly air conditioned. After TOTR the boys went to Barnes and Noble while Kasey and I went to..... American Girl. If you haven't heard oof it it's where you pay 105.00 dollars to buy a doll that is similar to you - in skin and hair and eye colour. Then the idea is to make a mini you by buying matching outfits - a dress for Kasey would have been about 50.00 and then 20.00 for one for the doll. It goes on and on, shoes, pets, crutches, plaster casts, even wheel chairs. The store was over 3 floors and includes a beauty salon for the dolls, seriously, 14.00 dollars to get the DOLLS ears pierced! Many hair styles to chose from for the DOLL - starting at 20.00! OMG - I looked at the girls "doing" the dolls hair and thought America really needs to take a look at itself, so bizarre. It was packed, they love it here. Kasey
kept on hoping, but the more I saw the more I couldn't do it. She's decided to ask Santa but I think the whole thing is a long andd slipperly slope!
After that we headed to Barnes and noble and spent ages shopping for books - stocked up for the next leg of the trip and then headed home in the exhuasting heat. We're good at making sure we get the airconditioned car on the subway - jusst like the locals. Bought take away for dinner and hid from the heat. On the way home we hit 7/11 for slurpees - my fav is piina colada - the BEST. Like everything way too over sized, what would cost 4.00 dollars at home costs about 1.50 here, the small is barely drinkable everthing is jut so big.
Day 9
Greg took our last lot of washing early but due to the extreme temps we can't get it back until tomorrow AM - which will be citting it fine as we leave at 8.30am tomorrow. Another super hot day right from the start. Kasey and I went to the post office to off load collection of stuff from Rome
onwards. The we both went to have haircuts- VERY impressed but no Lauren! We then shopped, ducking in and out of airconditioning all the way along Manhattan Ave. The locals are all telling us there's going to be a black out - but until then I'm keeping the air conditioning on high!!
Besides finalising the blog we culled and packed in preparation for the cruise - which i can't believe is just 2 days away. I'm going to spend the rest of the day online going over the rest of the trip as I don't know if/when I'll have internet access again.
