Our last few weeks at home in the US we did quite a bit of socializing as well as working on the house. The big accomplishment was getting the heating system installed in the ground floor rooms of the house – that was one we really wanted to get done before leaving for Paris. Bob hates to do trim work, but he got this done in the downstairs bathroom as well (and it looks great if I do say so myself). Only thing is now I will have the project of putting a finish on the trim when we get back to the US next time. Bob says he will put on the trim, but I have to finish – guess that is fair.
As for socializing – we made a very quick trip out to Trumansburg and only had a chance to see a few friends – our apologizes to those we didn’t make contact with, but we had a small window of time to travel out there due to numerous appointments we had. Had a chance to entertain in our home a couple of times by having our neighbors over for dinner and overnight guest of Bob’s sister
and husband. It was nice to have a chance to entertain in our ‘new’ old home! We had a great reunion with our long term friends Joe & Meredith as they were passing through the area. Also got to try out a new restaurant (to us) in the area with my sister and her husband.
It was also wonderful to be around to see the newest addition to the family, Hannah. I had a chance to meet her when my Mom got to see her for the first time as well. Very exciting to have a new one in the family!
My Mom had a cataract operation so was able to help with getting her to the appointments for that as well as getting her set up with a color colored schedule for all the drops she has to do as a result. Gave Janice another chance to use those excel spreadsheet skills! Unfortunately the 2
nd eye surgery was postponed so not able to help with that one, but Mom seems to have it all worked out well with putting in her drops regularly. The great thing is that she is seeing better already even with only 1
of the eyes done. Glad I was around to help with the first one.
In the last week home we even got in a little culture by attending a wonderful concert held at Skidmore College. We have quite a few cultural activities to take advantage of in the area, but unfortunately hadn’t taken the time to do yet, so glad we hooked into this one. Will keep it on our radar for the next time we are back in the US.
Last but not least was figuring out how to fit everything we wanted to take back to the boat into 2 suitcases with keeping to the limit of 50 pounds each. Nothing like a challenge with that last one. Normally we do fine with this even with a pound over, but guess this time our scales and the airport scales didn’t match and we had to scramble at the last minute to remove a few things and put into our carry on luggage. That was completed and we were just getting ready to sit down to wait a few hours for our boarding time, when Bob realized that we were missing one of our carry ons. Oh
Enjoying the Views On Our Way to Paris
got a chance to see London & green grass below no, what to do? Fortunately for us we had loaned our truck to my sister and husband while we are gone so a quick call to my brother-in-law. We went through security with the other carry on before Bob went to wait for the other bag. Good thing we did as it was checked over thoroughly. Bob had brought some butyl tape for the boat and that was questioned, but a more thorough check was done when they came to our Dri-X (used to take moisture out of the air in our closets). They had to wipe it all down, apply drops to be sure it wasn’t an explosive and when done, everything was given back to us. Can’t complain at all about a thorough security check.
Bob connected with my brother-in-law and our missing carry on bag just in time. Thanks again for your efforts Peter! Bob had to go through security with this bag and found he had put another bag of Dri-X in it. He told them just to keep it as we were very tight indeed with getting to the plane in time. The person at the gate even said he’d hold the door open
for up to 2 minutes for us. We made it onboard – one benefit of being the last ones on a full plane is it was definitely easy to find our seats!
With all of that behind us, we started our journey to Paris. Our connections this time weren’t the best as we flew from Albany NY to Chicago, then to London and our final destination of Paris. Fortunately we had 3 seats for the 2 of us on the longest leg of the journey so not bad indeed.
We are now enjoying lovely spring weather with plenty of green grass, flowering trees and lovely flowers in the gardens here. We arrive on Wednesday night, got lots of sleep that night and then started with a few housekeeping errands – putting away all of the things we brought back to the boat from the US, buying a few basics at the store, connecting with others that we had met in the marina before leaving last fall at a lovely barbeque and getting our sim card in order to have wi-fi from the boat and a phone. The phone is already needed as the only problem we came back
to was finding that our refrigerator/freezer is no longer working. Buying daily ice for now until we can find someone that can do the repairs. Wish us luck on that one!
While running around doing errands we came across a lovely garden so took a few minutes to check it out. Square Georges Cain has a display of numerous historic pieces – one was a column and portico from the Palace at Tuileries and a rosetta from the old Town Hall. A very peaceful square to stop and enjoy.
Just a quick update to let you know that we are safely back on Tsamaya. Our plan is to stay here until the beginning of May but the refrigerator repairs may change that – hopefully that works out for us and we can leave at the end of the month. Until then we will enjoy our time in Paris.
