farming area - Waupoos Canada
view from our bike ride near Waupoos - lots of blueberry fields and hollyhocks along the roadside We have been looking forward to having a block of time on the boat and it is finally here. We decided to have new canvas made for Tsamaya to give us more living space. It was suppose to be done before our vacation but it wasn't completed in time, so took off with part of it done and then returning it at the end of the vacation to complete it. What we have seen we are pleased with. It proved itself when we had a couple of hard thunderstorms. We took off from Crescent Yacht Club in Chumount, NY. The CYC was established in 1901- a very nice location and great people -very friendly and helpful. We left Chumount on Saturday AM and took off for Clayton NY - got some nice sailing in before getting to the St. Lawrence River when we became a motor boat as the wind died. We have been up in this section before but it is still a beautiful area. The biggest change we saw was that Wolfe Island is now covered with windmills - the Canadians sure were smart and are gaining lots from windpower. Quite an impressive sight! It is amazing how many
Windmills on Wolfe Island
It is amazing to see all of the windmills on Wolfe Island - you can get a feeling for the size of them in comparison with this tanker were erected since last year when we were here last.
We covered quite a bit of territory on this trip - we crossed over to Canada and spent our 35th anniversary in "Gan" (Ganonque) and even got some use of our folding bicycles which we really enjoy. Also anchored out at one of the 1000 Islands. Met some people that were at the start of their adventure. They are just a year ahead of us as they recently sold their house and moved onto their boat and were heading south. We spent one day in Kingston, Ontario exploring the city and then had a great curry dinner at an Indian restaurant - nice for a change of pace. Learned another lesson however. There was a very hard rainstorm and we had left our "tent" over the open hatch thinking that would take care of it. Well, needless to say the next morning we spent some time at the dryers at the marina as needed to dry our bedding.
Our travels up to here had been to places we had been to before - now we were going to explore new territory by heading to Picton - a really
Picton, Canada
Picton is located at the end of a very deep bay - quite a quaint location with lots of boats - this is a typical view that you see from here pictureque farming area. We liked the area so much we spent 3 nights anchored by Glen Island - took the dinghy into Picton to explore one of the days. It is so relaxing when we are at anchor - this is truly a vacation. We had planned to take our bikes from the Picton area to Waupoos but we were having some problems with the batteries keeping a charge so decided to motor over to Waupoos instead. Glad that we did as we decided to buy new batteries and were able to do it there. Again, used our bikes to visit the local winery and even had a chance to buy some fresh blueberries for pancakes and some fresh corn on the cob for dinner. This is the way to travel!
Unfortunately we were near the end of our vacation, so we had to head back to Chaumont. When we left Waupoos Marina we were afraid we were going to have to motor the whole way as there wasn't much wind. Once we got out from behind the island we found there was wind so had a beautiful 7 hour sail. It was glorious and the amazing thing was
sunset from anchorage
One of a typical sunset we saw from our anchorage at Glen Island near Picton - not a bad way to end the day that we never even had to tack to get back! What a great way to end the vacation! One thing that we did figure out though was that we are having problems with the alternator so Bob is now researching what we need to get to replace what we have. As the saying goes, cruising is repairing your boat in exotic places. Well, for now it isn't too exotic, but it definitely means troubleshooting away from home port. Returned a week after the vacation was over to pick up our boat with all new canvas. We are very happy with the work that Paul Norton did - it really came together very nicely and best of all he was great to work with. Anyone up in this area that needs canvas work should definitely check him out.
This was a great vacation and gave us more experience with Tsamaya and how she handles - we are very pleased and are looking forward to calling her home next year.
