Help! I'm treading water......trying to keep up with my blogs. Fear not - eventually I'll get the job done but it's going to take awhile. Do I hear Cheers??? Please just be patient. "All good things come to those who wait" ---- used by Violet Fane in 1892. And now me: used by Sandy Guenter in 2016.
On July 16th, Cory & I decided we would go to the Italian Festival on Hertel Avenue in Buffalo, NY. We have never gone before but we love Italian food (or just about any food, note photos)....Cory loves meatballs mostly....just meatballs and of course, pizza. We usually go to the huge Allentown (Buffalo) Art Festival but they predicted rain this year so we didn't go. It never rained! So much for the local weathermen. Blaaat! So, it was an easy choice for us to go to this festival. It hasn't rained enough in months to put in your eye! It was a beautiful day. Cory and I met and lived six years in Buffalo so Cory knows his way around town. Like an elephant, he doesn't forget. He's always been good with directions ...most of the time. We marched through the tunnel of
food vendor booths trying to decide exactly what would be our choice of an Italian delicacy. There were a few merchant vendors so we bought a T-shirt. They had amusement rides for the kiddos. They played Frank Sinatra songs over loud speakers on many poles. It was festive! Finally, my lunch selection was a warmed, ham, cheese rolled-up bread sandwich that I can't remember the Italian name for it. Some came with spinach but I don't like spinach.....sorry Popeye. I couldn't even find the name of it with Google...and remember: Google is your friend! I dipped it in marinara sauce. It was good but not to die for. Cory got a slice of pizza. He said it was good. Our dessert was fried dough nuggets...they were really good. Of course, they were: covered in butter and confectionary sugar! "A minute on your lips: forever on your hips!" We split an order figuring that was better for our health and weight. HAH! We stayed about 2 hours. The festival wasn't quite as big as we had imagined but sufficient for some good walking exercise. Needed after the nuggets. Trudge, Trudge, Trudge...we finally made it back to our hot car. Whew.
Food truck
Interesting name for it We decided to go home a different way...we had a goal in mind but that's going to be a separate blog. On the route we took, we passed an old memory spot from when we lived in Buffalo (1962-1968). It was Louie's....a small food stand known for it hot dogs and curly fries. It is located next to Sheridan Park (if you know Buffalo). After Cory and I were married and started our little family, we didn't have much money...check to check wealth (from Republic Steel where Cory slaved in the open hearth ...BLESS HIS HEART) was it! So, we went to Louie's quite often. The kids would play in the park and then we would get supper at Louie's. That was a big treat back then. Ah, the good ol' days! Simple but full of love and fun.
Screech, Squeal......Cory did a "U-ee" and we stopped at Louie's. It looks different now....many various ad-ons. Originally, you just walked up to a little white building with a small open window to order and get your goodies. Now, the order window is inside with seating. Originally, we sat on the lawn of the park and eagerly devoured our picnic supper.
Times and things change EXCEPT for the food! We only got the curly fries cause of the lunch and nuggets....they were just as delicious as we remembered. Yum! Louie's opened in 1951 so we were kind of one of their early customers. Cory was excited to tell the disheveled waitress who we were, that we had now come back and all what we remembered. She shrugged it off and served him our fries. So much for a warm welcome back! That's okay. We reminisced between ourselves. Then, another couple came in and sat down. So, Cory went over and told them our story. They smiled and seem happy to hear it but I really think they could not have given a hoot....they were just polite people. It was fun for us and that's all that really mattered. We continued on our journey, passing the Peace Bridge and the Buffalo skyline.
Our next stop is my upcoming blog. Far too much to combine all into one. Don't miss it cause you will really like it. So, folks...Hope you enjoyed going to these two Buffalo places. We enjoyed having you go along with us. Even though it was a blistering hot
day, I know you had fun. There was a nice breeze. Plus, singing along with Frank, we could hear you loud and clear. It always fun to "go home" -- this is where Cory & I met at the University of Buffalo, began our married life and started to raise 3 of our children. Wonderful memories that we cherish forever. Catch you next time around....soak up some of this wonderful sun and hot weather cause you know it won't be here after another month. Rats. (unless you live in the south, of course)
