Blog 03-02-20 Megan's visit
I have been enjoying the campground and the surrounding area, hiking and exploring.
Saturday night Megan arrived having landed in El Paso, TX and renting a car and driving to Deming. She is here to work in Las Cruses for a week and flew in early to spend Sunday with me. We had fun talking til we were falling asleep so we had to wait for tomorrow to continue.
We had a full day planned so we got up fairly early, had oatmeal pancakes for breakfast then headed to Rockhound State Park to walk in the desert. Since Megan drove in after dark so she was excited to see the area and discover what it had.
It was about a 20 min drive to the park and we parked and headed up the trail being careful of the loose stones and the spears on the cactus. Watson was thrilled to come along and has learned to stay on the paths to avoid the pickers.
I had been to the park the day before and the sun was shinning giving a very different appearance to the scenery. Today the weather is overcast with
a slight breeze and a temp in the high 50s. The altitude is about 4,000 ft so we took it easy climbing up the hill. We found a perfect rock seat and enjoyed the profound quiet, the scenery and each other. There was a bird singing from high in a small tree and I took his picture and was later able to identify him as a cactus wren. There were other birds flitting around we couldn't identify.
There were beautiful yellow flowers blooming close to the ground but the poppies had closed up overnight and hadn't opened yet.Pictures.
When we got back down to the car some of the poppies had opened so Megan could enjoy their delicate blooms.
We enjoyed the visitor's center then headed back home for lunch.
Megan packed up after eating lunch then we each drove to Las Cruses to drop Megan's car and luggage at her hotel then head to White Sands National Park which was another 50 min east. The park was a National Monument but became a Nat's Park in December so I brought my NP passport book to the visitor's center and got the new stamp. Hooray..
Megan's hotel had loaned her a saucer to slide down the sand dunes so off we went in search of the perfect ride. The sky was very overcast and the wind had picked up and we could see blowing sand from a distance. With the lighting so "flat" it was hard to tell where the sand began and the sky ended.
Watson was thrilled to feel something soft, cool and damp under his feet and he was like a puppy running up and down the dunes. Megan opted to go bare foot rather than sandals and enjoyed the soft feel of the dunes. The pictures looked funny with her bundled up riding a saucer on what looked like snow and having bare feet.
The ride wasn't as fast as snow but fun none the less and Watson couldn't stand Megan going down without him. He ran down the hill after her and was lucky to get a ride the next trip. It was great fun for all. Pictures
We were loosing the light and decided to head back to Las Cruses before dark. Arriving at the hotel we met one of Megan's coworkers who told us about
a great Mexican restaurant where we would meet 2 other coworkers for dinner. It was definitely an old west section of town and the restaurant was a very old building with several rooms that wound around in a maze. Our room was decorated with lots of bright colors and a skeleton on a balcony high on the wall. Our dinner was nice and the conversation fun but soon it was time to head home.
We said our goodbyes and I wound my way through the old section to I 10 that would take me directly to Deming. Megan rode back to the hotel with her coworker eager to get started on her job the next day.
I got home a little before 10 pm and both Watson and I crashed. Great day.
