Final day of vacation is here!! We went for a bike on the Osha Trail this morning, stopping at the bakery on the way. The Osha Trail was great but just a little challenging because of the elevation. We had a great day in Cloudcroft today. It started with breakfast at the Western Cafe, shopping along Main St., and a quick stop at the ranger station to pick up information about places to hike. While we were at the ranger station it started raining and hailing like crazy. Which actually was great timing because I was ready for a nap! There is no rain in the forecast for tomorrow so we're planning a morning hike on the Osha Trail and a trip to Ruidoso for dinner. ... read more

We left Lake Arrowhead at 5am, hoping to arrive in Cloudcroft by 6:30p, but it was such a long and dreary drive we stopped a lot. A billboard for IHOP outside of Indio, CA persuaded us to stop for breakfast. And then another billboard in Phoenix convinced us to stop at the Nike Factory Outlet store - where the temperature was 105°. I think we probably stopped at every rest stop from Tucson to Las Cruces. We were very happy when we finally arrived in Cloudcroft at 8:45pm - after about 14 hours on the road. We were way too tired for fireworks. We'll be spending the next two days in Cloudcroft - where cell phone reception really sucks. ... read more


Breathtaking - quite literally! We drove up from Ruidoso to an altitude of around 9,000 feet. It's been a while since we've been at that level and it was hard to draw breath at times. The views were hardly breathtaking though, as they were obscured by a thick layer of cloud, and we were right in the middle of it. The route through the Mescalero Indian reservation had been pretty but as we got higher and higher, we drove into thicker cloud. By the time we reached Cloudcroft we could hardly see the side of the road so we went straight through town and descended a little on the other side.
