No place at all....
2 seconds after this picture was taken, we were chased by (what my eyes see) Pitbulls....... (Hayley) So - We're getting later at leaving, 9.40am today!
We drove out of Clinton (without my G-Star jacket - gutted!) towards towns like Elk City, Sayre etc, then into a town called Texola. A complete guess here but I think its maybe called Texola due to being on the Texas/Oklahoma border. Basically both were pretty much ghost towns and almost completely deserted. We stopped to take a picture of one of the two buildings in Texola which had 'No place like texola' painted across it. And that certainly proved to be true, Like yesterday, if you remember, we mentined about Katie becoming dog meat, well today it was almost all of us, When suddenly 9 (huge) well ok, tiny yappie dogs came hurtling towards us, Nige yet again in his wisdom thought this would be a great photo opportunity, whilst myself on the other hand 'screamed' to 'go, quick go!' OH MY GOD I really thought we were gonners!! They chased us for all of 20 foot to me it seemed like a mile!...
Mclean and Groom were a couple of the towns that followed, and then came Amarillo - Famous for its free 72oz steak and some song
Ready, steady....Go!
Getting briefed on what he needs to eat and what he can leave apparently.... So with a bit of undecisiveness Nige suddenly announced he was going to attempt the steak. As they talked him through what he needed to do, a coach load of tourists turned up! He was then sat at the table with the webcam on him and his meal was served up, including a Baked potato, although he was 'allowed' to leave the skin, a salad, a bowl of coleslaw and a roll. Katie and myself then sat down to our 6oz steak! The waiter then broadcast to the whole restaurant that Nigel from England was about to attempt this challange' the timer went on and off he started. The texts from England began flowing in, as family and friends encouraged him via the webcam, (sorry you missed it shelley and Jay, but you were about haf an hour too late!!) then 53 minutes later and 58oz's of steak gone, he couldn't face another bit and had to stop, the other customers cheered regardless and off on our way we went.
A while later we drove through Adrian, the halfway point of Route 66. And shortly after that Katie's navigation skills came through again (Who am I to talk
1139 - Midway
In Adrian Texas, the midway point. Katie attempting a Marilyn Monroe pose. when all I have done so far is sit in the back!!) but, we were happily driving along when suddenly we came to a dead end, 'Oh, said Katie, It did say a couple of miles back this was a dead end' - Cheers Katie for letting us know, did it not occur to you - that may have been useful... ..!
Katie did however then manage to guide us onto Nigels brothers - Keith and Sylvia's in Albuquerque, Well ahead of schedule, We arranged to stay the night and went out in town for a couple of drinks, Also Myself and Katie got asked for ID, but with Keith's smooth talking! We were soon let in. (And to think it has been the only night so far that we did not have ID on us, but then again we are 29 & 30) Our plans now involve following route 66 as far as possible towards the Grand Canyon, then back on ourselves to Keiths again, for the weekend, then back again, to Vegas, before picking up route 66 where we left off, and on to LA....
This sure is one hell of a road trip!
