Mandie stepped up today and released me from my 8 day stretch of driving as we had a nice gentle 2 and 1/2 hour drive to Grand Canyon West mostly on the 66 and then straight up the 90. So I kicked back, devoured most of a packet of Cheetos and really took in the scenery. It was breath taking views all the way up to the canyons with plenty of stops for scenic pictures.
We decided against going into the skywalk which looks down into the mile deep valley as it was 40 dollars each more and you cant even take photos! We managed to get almost as good a view from the 2 points anyway. The shuttle bus takes you round the two best stops so you can stare down into the vast voids below. Pictures will never do this sight justice and you really have to be there to experience the true magnitude of it. I'm still really shocked there were no fences over the edge!!!!
I retrieved my position at the helm and did the second leg down and then across to Las Vegas. This road descending down from the canyons into Nevada across the
Colorado River and into the flat lands is worth coming here for on it own! However the deepening dread of what to come along with an ever increasing number on the thermometer started to worry me.
It got up to 46c, was Saturday evening and we had nothing but a rough idea through Google maps of where we were going. The roads were packed with hot impatient city drivers and cabs and we had to just wing it to find the entrance into the Car park at the MGM. As Julie and Mark know this is pretty insane. WE finally found it and wowzers this place really must be the 2nd biggest hotel in to the world! It took us about 20 mins just to get to the lobby!
After finally checking in and walking another 20 mins to our room through the heaving crowd of semi intoxicated guests, the key wouldn't work. We were both pretty fuming and it must have shown as they upgraded us to the Grand Tower to apologise!!!! This room has freakin speakers in the wall, automatic black out blinds and a stunning view over this huge place, it is just crazy.
I didn't really know what to expect with Vegas but wow there are just aren't words about how ridiculously insane it is. Its like computer game of a fair ground ride on steroids under a magnifying glass injected with food colouring and bright lights on a large array of stimulants. There is only 1 word for it........BONKERS. I could write an entire book about how bonkers it is.
I've spent the whole time so far deliriously walking around like a rabbit in the headlights being guided around by Mandie. IF I was here on my own, I'd probably have to set up shop and get a job in whichever casino/hotel I was in at the time as I cant even find my way out of the one were in!!
DAY 2:
With the blazing heat wave here at the moment we bought 2 metro passes today to cruise down to the other 7 stops on the strip to visit al the other hotels. They are all elaborately designed to mimic various iconic cities around the globe, Paris, Egypt, new York etc. The metro tickets were a good idea as just walking 1/4 mile from one place to
the next nearly made us collapse and we had to sit down in the cool for about half hour as we both had minor heat stroke. It was ridiculous, we had to get a taxi back to that location just to get back on the metro, I guess we are just rubbish in the dessert!
So most of that day we've been mainly cruising the casinos, spending may too much money on food, going on lots of rides and getting lots of blisters. Thought id combine the two days into one post so there may be lots of pics!
