May 17 - Day 3 - Las Vegas
Oh Yeah! Another day in Vegas! Temp today will be 101 and I will spend a lot of my time
inside. M and I wander down to the gardens and pool area. The Flamingo has a pretty nice
pool. At 10am there were many lounges empty which is nice if you are a sunbather. Not me
or Marilyn. By 10:30 we were eating our breakfast, taking our time, lingering over my
coffee and M telling me how she wants to go look at the stores at Caesar's Forum.
So...that's where we headed after breakfast. Caesar's is "right across the street" so it
only took us about 30 minutes to get there. We are told (by an informed cabby) that they
want to tear down Caesar's and build a new one. After all, it's 40 years old. Our source
tells us that Wynn is removing its golf course ($500 a round and for guests only) and building condos. Wynn is already expanding its hotel to 9,000 rooms. A new hotel/casino is underway right now next door to Wynn. According to this cabby, over 75 million visited Vegas last year and it gained over 150,000 new residents. An acre of land on the "strip" is worth about $7 million. The Flamingo is doomed and will be re-built, as is the Stardust and two more that I can't remember. Trump is here with his new condo building. The cabby said there are rumors that the MGM and New York will be re-done or torn down. The city is a forest of building cranes with no end in sight for the expansion of Las Vegas.

M and I came here on our honeymoon in 1964, stayed in a motel right on the strip for about
$20. There were only a handful of casinos on the strip at that time.

We wandered through the very expensive stores in Caesar's, watched the moving statues
perform (Ok, if you have nothing else to do), drank a $6.50 Corona and walked back to the
Flamingo and decided to stop at Margaritaville for, what else, a margarita. About 2 hours
later and 2 top-shelf margaritas under our belts plus guacomole and chips (M's idea) we
staggered back to our room and immediately fell into an alcohol induced nap lasting for more
than an hour.

By 6pm we were in a cab heading to the Stardust to pick up our ticket to the Tim Conway and Harvy Korman show starting at 7:30pm. To tell you the truth, the show was better than I expected for comedians approaching their 80's. They really entertained us, reminding us of
the golden age of television. After a snack we are back in our room, packing our bags for
our next adventure - Zion and Bryce Canyon National Parks.
