Dulles Airport
Mom and Natalie watched the bags. Hays Family Vegas trip!
Well, it is going well so far. Packing was interesting. It is different to pack for a vacation where you are travelling with others and going to only one destination as opposed to packing it light and travelling to many different places. I am much more used to backpacking it and travelling from city to city. Although we are staying just in Las Vegas, I whipped out the old backpack and decided to use it. Let me tell you, I so very much prefer my backpack to traditional luggage.
Luggage: a few tanks, some shirts (ones that I can wear casually or out for a night, and yes, that is a chore), some warm clothes (nice jeans, sweater, sweatshirt) and various shoes that are comfortable yet dressy (however, I am boycotting the cold and didn’t think to bring closed toes shoes), and the gym clothes (let’s see if I ACTUALLY do any sort of exercise). Who knows what to expect. I am planning for nice warm and hot days, and cold chilly nights.
We made it on the planes wonderfully. Everything has been exactly on time. Mom and Natalie were the self-designated luggage watchers

the second you land, there are slot machines in the airports. Dad and I did the coffee and food runs. Neither of us like to sit still knowing we are about to sit still on a plane. Mom and Natalie had no problem relaxing, which is good. Do you know how much of a pain it is to lug a big backpack to the bathroom!?!
United isn’t too shabby (aside from having to pay for check on luggage - hence my backpack, it carries a lot and you can still carry it on, LOVE IT!) We had to fly to Dulles, and then head to Vegas. It is a 5 hour flight from DC to Vegas. All I can think of is “man, just add three more hours, head the other direction and I am in EUROPE! We are definitely a unique and special country to be as large and diverse as we are. It is cool to be a United States citizen.
The airport in Vegas was crazy. There were slots the second you got off the plane, and believe it or not, people were playing them. We had to wait a while for our one checked on baggage, and then to get our shuttle

it is a long haul to the airport. (There is a deal, 12 bucks to and from the airport to your hotel it was decent). We had to wait about 30-45 minutes for our shuttle, which wasn’t bad except for it was FREEZING outside. Note: in the desert, it is cold in the evening. Even if you think you know it is cold in the evening, bring warmer clothes. There is wind. And it is brutal.
We arrived at our hotel (MGM Grand). It is pretty neat. Dad and I explored a bit because we weren’t quite ready to go to bed (the excitement just kept us up). We headed around the entire hotel (or so we thought) and explored it a bit, then headed out to a CVS just down the block. Then it was bed time, and man, were those beds awesome. It may even be an easier sleep than my mattress at home (and I have an awesome mattress!)
