Las Vegas for the big 3 0! Thursday 22nd October
We met my friends Rory and Morgan at Circus Circus Hotel bar with bottles of Heineken in hand, not that impressed that they'd had to pay for beers each time, even when gambling. We reassured them that free beer was available especially with Nicole around to point us in the right direction. It was lunchtime and it was about time I begin ticking the list of things I wanted to do for birthday celbrations. The first on the list: go and shoot some guns. Bowks and Nicole dropped myself, Rory and Morg down at the Gunstore, yes the Gunstore. A shooting range where any Tom, Dick or Harry can walk in off the streets and shoot pretty much any gun they choose, madness! So whilst us boys drooled over which guns to fire Bowks and Nicole headed off for a spot of shopping, or so I thought.
After looking at possible options the guns of choice were a pump action shot gun, an AK47 and an MP5 for Morgan and myself whilst Rory enjoyed choosing the saw gun and Smith and Western and a couple of others, 20 minutes
of great fun.
Whilst waiting for Bowks and Nicole to return we played a spot of penny flicks against the wall, all in prep for big gambling that eve. Nicole and Bowks soon arrived and we headed off for some afternoon brunch at the Yard House which boasted the largest collection of draught beer in North America. After a couple of beers and some food we headed onto the Strip. We decided first to take a trip to see the lions in the swanky MGM hotel/casino. It was here Bowks decided to pull her surprise and presented me with a room key for the MGM hotel, the very one we were in, being the largest hotel in the world. What a winner! So straight up to the room with Rory, Morg, Nicole and Bowks which had been pre-decorated with balloons, champagne on ice and beers at the ready. I couldn't believe it, a really great surprise. So we drank, warmed up our card fingers and hit the town taking a cab back to the Freemont Street at the other end of the strip with the only real plan to win BIG!
The free drinks were on tap once
again and Rory and Morg soon were in full flow and happy and Morg very quickly found himself chips up in blackjack. 12 o'clock approached and I was presented with a bottle of champagne at my card table which we all shared a glass of on the stroke of 12. Yes, yes, yes, 30's here I come! Don't think I mind being 30 at all.
Champers drank and on to Sahara Casino which offered both $1 and $5 blackjack, great for us big gamblers! 4 hours later, an MGM hotel room calling, leaving Rory and Morg showing no sign of wilting.
Four hours of sleep later I was awake and ready to celebrate October 23rd to the full. So I opened my cards that had managed to make it over to the States and made a few calls home and also open my other present from Bowks, tickets to see the Cirque De Soliel that eve. Once again, what a winner, one very happy Doddy! A quick dip in the hotel pool and showered we met Nicole and then conatcted Rory and Morg who sounded much as I had felt the morning before - rough. But they were
up so we went and me them found perched on a bench, coffee in hand outside their hotel.
We all fancied a fry up so went and indulged in the buffet breakfast at the Circus Circus hotel. This is where I broke it to Rory that we were planning to hit the roller coasters of Las Vegas (another thing on my tick list). Rory replied with something along the lines of "No chance!"
No more than an hour later we were strapped in to our first coaster of the day which proceeded to fly us all over the place. It was good but better still yet to come, next stop the Stratosphere, a hotel/Casino taller than all the others and with an observation deck perched at the top and then above that 3 thrill seeking, poop your pants rides! All looked relatively tame whilst down at ground level, however it's a complete different kettle of fish when you're 1000ft. in the air! Each of the rides certainly provided the thrill factor, especially the one that tipped you over the edge of the tower at speed and stopped you just at the point you shouted some spontaneous obscenity as
if your last word before plunging to your death, and then doing it all over again. Great, and the other rides were much the same and our faces were priceless!
Roller coasters done and our sleep deprivation rejuvenated by pure adrenaline we said goodbye to Nicole. Bowks and I left Rory and Morgan to go and shower before the Cirque De Soliel later that eve for which Rory and Morg had tickets too. The show was great and although the storyline was sometimes hard to follow, the rhythmic movement was fantastic aided with the complementary iced margaritas and popcorn.
After wards we all returned to mine and Bowks room to drink Champagne and beers before heading out for some tea at Hooters where girls in skimpy clothes serve burgers and beers (another thing off the tick list). Food revitalisation, complete with Hooters girls singing me a birthday song we all headed to see the famous fountains outside the Bellagio Casino before once again hitting Vegas casinos with the hope of winning big.
6 in the morning and not yet won my million and feeling very drunk Bowks and I grabbed a cab back to MGM. What a
very good birthday, not a millionaire but memories to last a lifetime.
