SNOWSHOE THOMPSON Snowshoe has pretty much faded into obscurity nowadays, but he was the only man I ever heard my dad speak in awe of. Both of them were mail carriers. My dad had a mail route out through Ophir, near Auburn; he drove a 1955 Nash Rambler on his route. It was a good job, but, of course, he didn’t keep it long. Snowshoe carried the mail twice a month on his back across the Sierras in the winter. My dad thought Snowshoe was the toughest man who ever lived. I do not doubt it.
