The one about what remains of Katrina Up very early – that stupid one hour time change is going to rock my boat for a long time. But, there sure is one good thing about being so far east in a time zone. The sky was bright at 6:00 am. The sun was up over the yard arm way before 7, and when I was on the road at 7:30 the dew had dried off the windshield. First stop, McDonalds. I have been Jonesing for a bacon/egg/cheese/English muffin for a long time now, and it sure went down good. Funny story, but not so funny, but funny anyway. I ran out of tissues this morning, and rather than use the skinny toilet paper you have to use in RVs, I figured I would appropriate a large ... read more

2-7-07 I awoke around 8:00 and tried to work on the Journal. but wasn’t having any luck with the website. I ate a big continental breakfast thinking I would skip lunch. I left the motel around 11:00 and headed towards New Orleans. As I drove down 90 the houses and area looked a lot worse. In a lot of areas all that could be seen were foundations. It was pretty horrible. I drove as far as I could until I ran into a bridge that was out. I knew the bridge was out, but hoped to see what it looked like. I couldn’t see much so I turned around to go back to a road which went to Interstate 10. As I drove to 10 I saw a church sign that stated there were volunteers there ... read more

What a rewarding day. I worked today with my friend and host Lou Rizzardi on his yard. Doesn't sound like much, but it really made both of us feel better. He claims that this "saved his life" but that is overly dramatic. He really meant that removing the visual burden of coming home everyday and seeing the amount of work that still needs to happen on his yard was incredibly helpful to his psyche. Here are my observations for the day: 1. Volunteers need help, too. From working with Lou, I could tell how exhausted he was, but how much he needed to take care of himself and his family, and have a day off from helping others. I hope that the community can honor the local volunteers as well as as the non-community volunteers. I ... read more

This day seemed like a heavily emotional day. I think the time hearing people's stories, lack of sleep, and trying to help have taken its toll on me. 1. Depression setting in. I was invited to attend the DeLisle Elementary School, which currently educates all students K-12 from Pass and the county. While there, I talked with David, a middle school student, who was an office aide. He walked me around the campus, which consisted of the original elementary school, and probably 50 trailers, which now served as classrooms. I asked him how he was doing and what he could use at school. David said he wanted some life on campus, since all they had was a dead tree. The rest of the campus was devoid of life, as was most of the town, missing many ... read more

Today was quite a display of contrasts: outdoors building a fence to indoors taking appointments; outdoors shooting wildlife photos to indoors at a smokey bowling alley. I loved it. 1. Volunteers Rock! Today, I had the privilege of hanging out at the nearby bowling alley in Diamondhead with the AmeriCorps staff. They meet there every Thursday night to chill and have fun. I was shocked to see some of these 40 twenty-something people walking around with bowling bags! Well, at the bowling alley, I spoke with several people who were so proud of the corp and the young people (high school and college kids) for coming to town and truly providing the type of assistance that residents really need to start to get their lives back on track through volunteer hours mucking houses, picking up trash, ... read more

Today was a day of extremes. The no-see-ums, or gnats, were out in force, so I looked to be inside. Again, I heard people's stories, talked with several volunteers as well as residents. And, I took another look at the place around me, which I tried to envisioin with lots of full, green trees, green lawns, and carefully crafted flower beds. It was hard given that I still saw lots of debris yet to be cleared. Here are my three main observations for the day. 1. Unorganized organizations is the rule of the day, but change is afoot. I came across many people the past several days who commented on how disorganized the recovery effort has been, and now that the community is moving towards rebuilding, how this hampers the efforts of all even more. There ... read more

My second day here was less strenuous, but very intriguing since I met many of the people benefiting from donations. No photos, but a good work day. See below for our thoughts from the group. Debby Observations from Debby 1. Volunteers on a mission. Many people I met today came through either a religious group or were serving on a mission. Leslie is a young woman living in Los Angeles with a missionary group; Marilyn came for the week with her christian group to help in anyway she can; Gabriel is from Los Angeles with another missionary group; and another Leslie was told by god to quit her job and drive from Michigan to Pass C with her husband in her camper. A missionary group held singing and dancing to christian rock, and it looked like ... read more

What an adventure! Our group is staying with two sets of wonderful people, Lou and Wilma Rizzardi, and Marie Peralta, very fortunate people who had minimal and easy to repair damage to their homes in Pass Christian. Today, we got the lay of the land, looking at the places they visited last time in November. We made connections with new groups, say that some groups had folded, and observed a lot of young people here to volunteer on their spring break. What a vision. After eating lunch at God's Katrina Kitchen on the East side of town, Dave, Chris, and I headed over to the park, which is currently named "The Village" because it is the center of "town" now. We deconstructed a swing set and playground structure, rolled a lot of telephone poles into ... read more

Every now and then while traveling I stumble into a treasure. Such is Pass Christian Books. I was driving to the gulf coast as I came through the town of Pass Christian and noticed a used bookstore. I like used bookstores as I am never sure what I might find. This one is called Pass Christian Books. I went inside and saw the usual rooms with little signs on the doorways announcing the topics of the books in each bookroom that seemed to be a converted bedroom. The treasure was in the room titled Mississippi Writers’ Room. I didn’t realize how many noted writers of the last 100 years are from Mississippi. As the bookstore’s literature states, “Mississippi has produced at least nine writers in the 20th century - William Faulkner, Eudora Welty, Richard Wright, Shelby ... read more
