I have been bouncing around for the past week or so trying to decide if I wanted to spend what it would cost me to go to the Winter Carnival in St Paul, Minnesota. Going to the Winter Carnival in St Paul has been one of the things I have always wanted to do and since it is a something that only occurs once a year I decided I would bite the bullet on the cost and go. I invested most of yesterday evening and today in doing homework on the Winter Carnival in St Paul, Minnesota. I Found a nice hotel, the Hotel 340 on Cedar Street about a block and a half from Rice Park where most of the events for the Winter Carnival occur. I booked a room for February 3 thru Feb ... read more

During my trip to the Twin Cities, I decided that a nice thing to do would be to get the kids out of the house. I brought them to Como Park Zoo in St. Paul. It is a donation only zoo. So being that I was still in Nursing School (aka broke), it was not expensive other than the treats that I bought them. All of the kids have already been there but how can you go wrong with animals??? In 1897 the park was given three deer, which started the Zoo. It has expanded over the years to include seals, gorillas, tigers, among others. It is about 380 arces in St. Paul, just on the public transit line (or right off of it). It is a wonderful place to go, not only if you're tight ... read more

We apologize for the delay in sending this holiday missiveā€¦. time seems to have gotten away from us. Way away as it were. Clearly it is not the holidays any longer. Most of us are yearning for spring, but as always, we feel an desire to tell you of our travels, no matter where they take us. We hope you enjoy traveling along with us. In November, we wrote of the balmy climes, Parrot Heads and conch fritters as we enjoyed the best Key West had to offer. You would think that was to be expected from us, as we have spent a good deal of time in the Sunshine State, even having lived there for more than a few years. In December in a startling 180 degree turn of events, we headed to the soon ... read more

Built inside a historic train repair shop, this Best Western is the most unique hotel I've stayed at. The original train tracks run through the floor! The original wooden ceiling beams are still there, as well. The rooms are all situated around a lobby with a platform that replicates a train stop along a train route. How fun is that? Get wireless high-speed Internet and a free continental breakfast. There is also complimentary parking, an indoor pool and whirlpool, a kiddie pool and exercise room. Although we didn't get a full night's rest there because of our early morning flight, I would recommend the place to anyone. We'll be back. 1010 Bandana Boulevard West St. Paul, MN 55108 (651) 647-1637 http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/productInfo.do?propertyCode=24130... read more

Introducing "The Team" Engineers for a Sustainable World (ESW), University of St. Thomas, Minnesota, coordinated a J-term trip in 2008 for five engineering senior students and two advisors to travel to the Karagwe District of Northwestern Tanzania. The purpose was to install two solar-powered water pasteurizers. The seniors had majored in a combination of ME and EE and one in both. They were: Andrew DePompolo / Tom Knowles / Ann Majewicz / Jason Menken / Andre Trawick IV / The original advisors included Dr. Kaye Smith, School of Engineering and one other who had to back out at the last minute because his father was extremely ill. The team looked outside for another advisor and invited me, Professor Jan B. Hansen, School of Education at the University of St. Thomas. Our team leader, Ann spearhead... read more
