Headed south for the first time

This is Wednesday night, in Marquette, Michigan.

We are at the top of our trip. We are located at 46.55 North, 87.41 West. The elevation here is 754ft. We are at a higher elevation than over in Munising, which was at 600ft. In fact, I have learned that most of the Great Lakes are about elevation 600ft.

We are above the 45th parallel. We passed a roadside marker near Leland, Michigan that indicated we were mid-way from the equator and the North Pole. That's a long way from home.

Tomorrow, we will drive South for the first time on this trip. Our goal is Green Bay but we may drive farther south.

Okay, after booking a room in Downtown Chicago for Friday and Saturday nights, we changed our minds. We decided that since we had both visited Chicago in the past that it would not be worth the cost of staying there. So, we planned to drive as far as we could today so that we could skip Chicago and head for St. Louis. Then we got a text message from our Amelia Island neighbors, Brad and Susan. They wanted us to stop over and have dinner

They have a unique lighthouse which seemed to be a major theme in the village.
with them on Friday night, about 30 miles west of Chicago. That locked in our plans to find a site near Milwaukee to overnight on Thursday and then drive to the Chicago suburb Oak Brook to overnight on Friday.

This drive along the west shore of Lake Michigan was some of the most scenic that we have had. It was rural for sure and still early in the season for some trees and flowers to be in full bloom.

At random we picked Port Washington to overnight, about 20 miles north of Milwaukee. We were pleasantly surprised with this location. The hotel was right on the water and clean. We were provided coupons for free drinks in their bar. The hotel agent also recommended that we dine at the Twisted Willow. We did and we loved it. Later we discovered that our son-in-law, Derek, has dined there before and he liked it too.

Tomorrow we will drive to see our friends. Not sure if we will have stops on the way.

G'night.

We could see and feel a change in the countryside when we entered this state.
