“What do you mean they only sent one letter?” I asked my mom.
“I don’t know. They only sent one.”
“But I thought they would be sending two letters. I hope the letter gets accepted.” I could feel my heart racing and my anxiety level rising. I thought about the consequences if one letter wasn’t enough to fulfill my visa requirements. If I had to wait for another letter to arrive to the U.S., I possibly wouldn’t get my visa back until the middle of April. In that case, it wouldn’t even be worth going. I was so disappointed and hoping that the one letter would be sufficient so that I could carry on with my plans. I decided to call Hana to see if I could get to the bottom of this. When I called, another lady answered the phone for Hana’s extension.
“Hello, is Hana available?” I ask, trying to hide my panic.
“No, Hana left for maternity leave today.” She answered, acting as if that news wouldn’t shatter my entire world.
“What!?!?” I was unable to hide my panic at that point. “She is helping me with my visa and I have an important question to ask her. The other lady, who was NOT Hana, took down my information and said that she would get back to me about the letter. I felt my blood pressure rising. Maternity leave? She never said anything about maternity leave! I tried to stay calm. About five minutes later, my cell phone started chirping and I saw a Chicago phone number.
“Ms. Eastwood, Hana here. You called with a question?” Again, not realizing how effected I was by the possibility she may be on maternity leave.
“Oh Hana! I am so happy to hear from you! Your colleague said you were on maternity leave. And If you ARE pregnant, then a big congratulations to you. But I was pretty worried when she told me that.” I gushed. Ok, I had lost it. I admit it. Hearing Hana’s voice was like hearing the voice of certainty after spending 40 days in the desert (Or in this case, the freezing cold northern Michigan).
She chuckled. “Yes, that was my colleague. And to answer your question, I only needed one letter from Hradec. They sent it to me via email, and I asked them to send me the original. But apparently, they have sent it to you. If you send it to me, your application should be complete.”
“Oh thank you! I will send it to you right away!” I breathed, relieved that my crisis was not actually a crisis.
***Fast forward to Tuesday, when Hana received the letter***
Hana called and let me know that she had received the letter. My application will be sent out on Friday. Also, since I began the visa process in November (That’s right, it’s been three months of frustration.), my visa should be back at the end of February. She confirmed that I would buy a plane ticket for early March without worrying. I was so thrilled! That would give me three weeks I thought I would have to give up! My mom, Ava, and I will be arriving in Prague on March 9
th, 2013. That means we leave in 43 days! I’m so excited!
