Leave it to Sally and I to pick the hottest day of the summer to take a day trip to Boston. The temperature in Boston on Friday the 19th of July was 100 degrees with a dewpoint of 75 degrees. Got up early Friday morning and drove to the home of our friends Jack and Janet O'Connor in Plymouth Mass. Jack and Janet's son, Ryan, had just come home early Thursday morning from a tour in Afghanistan. Welcome home Ryan!!! We drove to Quincy Massachusetts where we caught a ferry to Boston. The ride was about 35 minutes long and was the coolest part of the day. Arrived at long wharf about 10:30 am and begin our tour of Boston. The city of Boston was founded in 1630 by puritan colonists from England and it soon became the political and economic center of New England. Between 1630 and 1890 the physical size of the city of Boston had tripled from 19 square miles to approximately 49 square miles. This expansion was accomplished by annexation of neighboring municipalities and by land reclamation, the filling in of mudflats and marshes and by filling in gaps between wharves along the waterfront. After arriving in Boston we proceeded, by taxi, to the Prudential Center to purchase tickets for the duck tour, a tour of Boston by both land and water. The lower level of the Prudential Center consisted of a wide array of shops and restaurants. Since we had several hours before our tour started, we decided to walk to the original Cheers bar which is located at the bottom of Beacon Hill. Not the best idea due to the heat and humidity in Boston on Friday but it was an interesting walk. We proceeded down Boylston Street past Copley square and Trinity Church. Copley square was the location used for the Boston bombing memorial. It is also the location of Trinity Church. Trinity Church was one on the locations used for the movie, National Treasure, with Nicholas Cage. We walked thru the Boston Public Garden which was the first public park created in the United States. Right across the street from the garden is the location of the original Cheers Bar at the foot of Beacon Hill. Tried to have lunch at Cheers but the place was packed and a long wait just wasn't in our schedule. Rode the T (Boston Subway) to the

Aquarium where we picked up our duck tour of the city of Boston. Great tour and highly recommended. After completing the tour, we had a late lunch at Legal Sea Foods on Long Wharf. Great meal and the air conditioning felt fantastic!! It was a short walk from there to Quincy Market. Quincy Market is located in the heart of Boston and consists of 50 shops, 14 restaurants and 40 different food court stops. It is also the location of the replica of the original Cheers Bar. After walking thru Quincy Market it was time to proceed to the wharf where we boarded the ferry back to Quincy. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Go Boston!
Nice segment Jim! Takes me back to my youth. We loved seeing Boston when I and the family were there in 2004. Toad wants to make another excursion one day and I know Knob will be upset if he doesn't get to go but his time is running out for vacations. Soon enough, he'll be heading off to college to make his own way in the world. Sorry about the heat there. Believe it or not, we've been getting somewhat of a break around here. The monsoon season is finally dumping some rain and the temps hover around 100 but with less humidity that what you're experiencing. Go figure. Thanks again for the history lesson.
