Discovered that our travel items no longer fitted within the suit cases taken. Not sure if the cases shrunk or our travel mementoes are multiplying. Walked around and did some last minute shopping, returned and packed and decided to have a last dinner at the Gumbo Shop. Finished dinner, said good night to the bums and beggars in Jackson Square, and returned back home ... read more

Today we booked a tour of the countryside and the plantations of the south. Learned more about the Hurricane havoc and local info. The first plantation we visited was a sugar cane slave plantation called Oak Valley. This old house has been used over the years in various movies. We also went past the house used in the movie The Skeleton Key and the lady who drove our bus told us that it is completely haunted and that the story was based on a true story. After the tour of Oak Valley we had lunch and after leaving for the next house the driver then told us that the ladies bathroom was haunted by the ghost of the plantation owner (however is apparently a friendly ghost). This still freaked us out however because Jewel and ... read more

How hot is it. Humidity is up around the 90's and is a killer. Decide to stay inside as much as possible and agree to hire a movie - Casino Royale - which takes us to mid afternoon. Still hot outside from where we decided to go to Harrahs New Orleans Casino and sat on the tourist friendly 1c machine (which still got us free drinks). Found Zels favourite friend Mr Cashman who took our money Now we know where all the people in the city are hiding to get out of the heat. Later, we went down to Bourbon St to check it out at nite. Still really sleazy. heaps of jazz bands, but pretty packed. Had Jimbalya for dinner and watched the passing freak show. ... read more

Today was tour day. We decided to get an air boat through the bayous and swamps of the Mississippi River. On the way down to the river to board our boat the tour guide explained how things were from Katrina. We learnt that the actual hurricane didn't cause all the damage. The real problem was the fact that over the years man made canals had caused the bayous and swamps to erode. This together with inadequate levees caused the problem. Most of the damage was after the actual hurricane. The biggest problem however was the lack of cohesion between the government overseer (FEMA) and the local authorities and emergency services. As a result, adequate sewage, water and power services (whilst running as the result of short term fixes) were not as they were before the ... read more

We decided to explore the city. Went down to the Mississippi River where all the action seemed to be. The river is really dirty but the atmosphere was great. It was Essence weekend which meant that heaps of bands were in town. We didn't get to see any but decided to take the kids to the Imax and we all watched Hurricane in the Bayou which was all about Katrina. The quarterhouse appears to be a "union" of three buildings over the decades and arriving at our room was an experience. Taking the lift to the third floor, we then walked down a total of three main corridors and took 8 seperate right or left turns and steps. The corridors either went up or downhill as the original building has been expanded into acquired adjoining ... read more

House is subletted, bills are paid (that may be a first) and I've been being mean to the cats so they won't miss us when we leave. 70 days in Peru and Bolivia coming right on up. Leaving July 4th, unbelievably bad timing. For 5 years I've been waiting to see an American take back the world championship in Hot Dog eating, and for the first time since that Japanese rascal Kobayashi ate his way into the record books, the smart money is being laid down on a hometown boy. Mark Chestnut...remember where you heard that name first. Picture a man 1/2 Rocky, 1/2 Rambo, and 2/3 wolverine. July 4th, Coney Island, in front of Nathan's, he will bring the crown home, and I'm going to be on an stupid airplane missing the best day in ... read more

...So...continuing where I left off last...we made it to this guy's house, where he had told us to meet him. It was a pretty suburban place, about 60 miles north of Houston. We get there after riding 18 or so miles with my wheel wobbling all over the place and he informs us that we're going to have to go wait because he has to go open his bike shop and he can help us with my wheel only after he gets done with work because he doesn't have any *spokes* at his BIKE SHOP. Very puzzling. And why wouldn't he let us come to his bike shop for a bike repair??? Also very weird. He seemed slightly annoyed that we were there, and went on to tell us how he doesn't have anything to do ... read more

Hey, so sorry it's been so long since we've updated anything. We've hit some bumps in the road since we last wrote, but things have been pretty great since we got to New Orleans. When we first got here and didn't know where we were gonna stay we went to the library, paid $3 to use the computer...stewy wrote paragraph after paragraph and then when he went to publish the server crashed. So we got to Austin just before my birthday, and it was a really great time. After we left we kept asking ourselves why we even did so. Stewy's friend Ben put us up in his guest trailer in possibly the coolest house I've ever seen. I guess it was an artist who got a grant to buy two lots and make all these ... read more

Friday, June 15, 2007 - Biloxi, Mississippi/New Orleans, Louisiana I touched down in Gulfport/Biloxi, Mississippi regional airport to start my New Orleans weekend getaway at 7:34pm. This was not my first time arriving in the State of Mississippi, but the stereotype of how the ‘poorest’ state in the Union would offer you was inevitably lingering on my mind. Of course the stereotype is not always what you find; Biloxi, Mississippi, for example, is glowing with wealth, as it is the gambling ‘Vegas’ capital in the Southeast United States. Biloxi is located within forty minutes of driving from City of New Orleans, and shared the same destruction fate during Hurricane Katrina in September 2005. After having a quick glance of the city, we continued on along I-10 West, and it is worth of mentioning that we ... read more

Greetings from New Orleans, Louisiana! Less than 48 hours from our mission travel to Liberia in West Africa, I headed down to New Orleans with Halef. We flew into Gulfport/Biloxi, Mississippi, within 40 minutes driving from the New Orleans city center, and stayed over Hilton Riverside in the French Quarter. We spent most of our Saturday in the French Quarter, checking out the St. Louis cathedral (the oldest, continuous operating cathedral in North America), St. Louis cemetery number One where Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau was buried, and Café du Monde for its famous beignet. It was a fun time, as usual, knowing that the city will thrive after the devastating Hurricane Katrina two years ago. We closed out the night with some Mardi Gras celebration, as everyday is Mardi Gras in New Orleans. We flew out ... read more
