Florida is suppose to be sunny and warm... the weather has not our best friend for a couple days.... very high winds and rain. So we just took it easy and relaxed. I picked up on knitting ... surprised myself and jumped right into it - guess its like riding a bike (but thanks to Cathie for the Pinterest post and reminder on how to make my edges correct!)
Had a great time exploring the old house - 502 Edison Drive; Pensacola Fla. It is so surprising how you remember something from your childhood.. I remember our house being so big and that huge oak tree being bigger than anything in the whole neighborhood (even took a couple lightening strikes)... well, when we rounded the corner and saw that tiny cinderblock house I just chuckled... how mom and dad raised 5 kids in this 3 bedroom/1bath house is beyond me - but during those days, it definitely didn't seem small - just normal!!!
(sorry for the interruption ... lost internet!)
now... where was I... oh, the old house - a guy standing in his yard stopped us wondering what we were doing (his house was across from Ellis'
house next door). I guess we did look suspicious, stopped in the middle of the road taking pictures! He has lived there since the 90's I think. He was telling us that the 'neighborhood watch' couple bought our house in the late 60's and lived there for many years before selling to a older lady (they now live on the next street over). The older lady passed away and her daughter could not afford the house - let it go to ruins... turned into a crack house, drug house, and really really bad place until the state took it over and bordered it up. The couple that now have it have done a lot to it - the yard is clean and the house looks freshly painted. I was surprised to see the house next door (on the opposite corner) was gone... I remember when mom ran over Queenie that man came and 'took care of things' while we went to church (and I cried throughout the service). While we were there Ronnie had called us telling us about his 'hidden time capsule'. As a child he and Steve put a couple silver dollars and various items in a coffee
can and buried it in the back yard... a couple feet from the water faucet. Mark wanted to go find it... I wouldn't let him - heck, we probably would have been shot!! The neighborhood is getting better... BUT ITS NOT BETTER YET!!
We then went on over to Pensacola Naval Air Station (NAS) .. it was a beautiful day to explore the base. There was several fly overs.. I wanted so much to video it to capture the sound - there isn't anything like it. But its not something that you can schedule.. haha
While on the base we looked at the RV Park... very impressive for sure - need to reserve a year in advance and can stay 3 months... only $20 per night! Definitely worth looking into... and, they have about 15 cabins - the host said a lot of snow birds come for the 3 months and during that stay they reserve a cabin or two for family to come down... it was a beautiful location for sure!
The weather finally took a turn for the better and I got a day at the beach... I really had forgotten how beautiful the Pensacola

Rained so hard you couldn't see the bay... Beaches were. Powder white sand with crystal clear blue waters... I did put my little toe in the water - COLD...
We left Pensacola on Friday, 3/16, around 10:15. The day was sunny and warm, of course! Our trip to Livingston Louisiana was suppose to be a quick 4 hour trip straight down I-10. We had planned on taking a lunch break and stopping by Biloxi to use my vouchers from Harrah's Gulf Coast. Traffic and construction was so bad our trip ended up taking over 6 hours! Needless to say we decided to postpone our Harrah's trip to another day! Even with the stop and go traffic we still got 8.4mpg! Not bad.... (Also, not knowing what would lie ahead we also stopped to top off the diesel - $3.749 per gallon)
We arrived at Lakeside RV Resort ready to end the day - in the pouring rain! The resort is only 1.6 miles off the interstate, so it was very easy to find. It is a very quiet and extremely nice rv park. Did I say rain... it poured all night!! I think the rain followed us from florida!
We decided to take advantage of
our Harrah's Gulf Port voucher... both Mark and I had one... mine was for $100 play plus $200 travel reimbursement - Mark's for $50/$100... down I-10 back towards Gulf Port (about 1-1/2 hr) for the day when Mark started noticing bill boards for another casino that advertised it would double other casino vouchers! So... why not! We went into Island View Casino and sure enough, they doubled our playing vouchers (but not the travel reimbursement). So I got $200, Mark $100, plus since we were new members to the casino received an additional $50 for me and $40 for Mark! We had a great time playing for about 3 hours and left with about $1300 in our pocket!! Never took one dollar from my purse 😊 Now that's a happy day!!!
Yesterday was a beautiful sunny day - in the 80's! The rain is finally OVER for the rest of the week - YAY.... Hopefully the ground will dry up some - its been a little soggy!
Oh... MEDICAL UPDATE:
1. No trip would be complete without Mark having dental issues! While in Florida he lost a filling. Good news is he found out he
has a 'Traveling VA Coordinator' - so while on the road, if anything happens all we need to do is call that number and they will coordinate any medical issues he has. Since he is having no discomfort with this, they are coordinating a dentist visit for him when we reach Prescott Arizona.
2. Roxie had a run-in with the sea-grass in florida. We heard her yelp and but didn't notice anything. The next day we noticed she was having issues with her eye. Everyday her eye was getting worse... I actually thought she was loosing her eyesight .. she would bump into things - so unusual! It got to the point she was not opening her eye, started rubbing it, and it was watering. However, surprisingly she was not experiencing any pain. I took her to a vet here in Livingston - the doctor was fantastic! After several tests and drops/die, he showed me that Roxie had a Corneal Ulcer. There was a scratch on her cornea from the sea grass. He prescribed a antibiotic ointment for us to apply 3 times a day for 10 days. He also told us she has the beginning stages of cataracts
in both eyes, but normal for her age. Roxie just turned 15 last Tuesday, and weights 8.8 pounds!
We will be here in Livingston Louisiana until Friday, then off to Texas... next post on Sunday!
