The central point in the French Quarter of New Orleans
New Orleans
After a long but very comfortable train ride we arrived in the Big Easy. We stayed the night with John & Abigail (CS) in the garden district. We ended up having Abby’s apartment to ourselves while they slept at John’s down the road. We did go out for a quick drink and bite to eat with our hosts as they wanted to partake in a celebratory birthday drink for one of their friends. The next day was spent exploring the French Quarter including Bourbon Street, Jackson Square and beignets (donut-like delights) at Café Du Monde. We partook in a walking tour around the streets enjoyed with a ‘to go’ Daiquiri. Unfortunately that was all we got to do in New Orleans as a mandatory evacuation was announced due to hurricane Gustaf. The Amtrak and Greyhound buses had been canceled in order to provide emergency evacuation so to ensure we had a confirmed way out of the city we rented one of the last cars available. At $200 for the day it was not ideal, but that was the option we had.
