Spanish Town Parade
This is the corner where you need to be for best viewing of this parade. Thursday - Friday - Saturday
On Thursday we drove to Baton Rouge from Atlanta stopping overnight near Mobile, Alabama. We arrived in Baton Rouge at mid-day on Friday. We came to see our good friends Jack and Debbie Harris. We first met them when we lived in Freeport, Grand Bahama Island. They often invited us to join them for Mardi Gras and finally we are.
It did not take long for the excitement to begin. On Friday evening we were able to ride on a float of the Krewe of Southdowns. It's a small parade with modest floats in the subdivison of Southdowns in an older part of Baton Rouge that has become popular with young professionals and others who want to live in a place that has an old time subdivision feel. It's a family parade that is probably largely unknown outside of Baton Rouge.

Lots of colorful characters here. to this Krewe take pride in being funky. It's a lot of fun but the floats are certainly not works or art. Baton Rouge has a number of New Orleans type parades with elaborate floats but they all are scheduled a week or two before Mardi Gras so that the floats can be brought back to New Orlears, redecorated and used in the New Orleans parades.
Spanish Town is an intown neighborhood known for its arts and artsy people. You'll see what I mean when you check out the photos. Afterwards, Jack and Debbie are having a little get together at their house.
Tomorrow we are driving down to New Orleans to enjoy Mardi Gras events there.
