What I've enjoyed most about blogging while in Peru is that it's allowed me to tell stories of people I've met, people I've observed, and people I've come to admire greatly. Tonight, however, I have a very personal story about someone far away in Kansas. On Saturday afternoon I received a voicemail from my brother that my dad had a stroke. That's not a fun message to hear when you're 3,600 miles from someone that you love dearly, especially if you're in a taxi...stuck in traffic...unable to call anyone. For 20 minutes I was left alone with my overactive imagination as I desperately prayed. Just as the taxi pulled up to my house, my sister-in-law called and filled me in on the news, in the calm way that she handles everything. She told me that dad ... read more

Ahh roosters. Nothin' like a 5 a.m. wake up call. A quick oatmeal breakfast, and we were off to hike to the garden. The trail wound up steep, muddy inclines, a coconut grove, and more inclines. We took a couple "GORP" breaks before the final 10-minute climb to the gardens. Total, it took us about an hour and a half to get there. As Lily, Rean, and Justin squished around picking various veggies, the rest of us sat and talked. After, we climbed back down to a resting place and ate lunch. Lily cut square leaf plates out of taro leaves, while Sher scooped rice & beef portions onto each plate. Coconut milk was the beverage of choice. The descent was much quicker than the climb; a snack of tiny bananas awaited at the bottom. Once ... read more

Hello readers. Here I sit: in A/C, living room couch, cutoff t-shirt, athletic shorts, hair in a knot, with a bag of pretzels and a glass of chocolate milk. A very typical "Brecken" siting, but a far different scene from where I was a mere three-ish weeks ago. It's funny how easily I can enjoy simple pleasures; namely chocolate and milk, two things that Sheridan has to travel at least a boat ride to maybe consume. Our trip was highly enlightening. Countless new experiences and just a ton of information. The first week or so was spent, as most of you know, in New Zealand. A very posh, very different country. But fun! We enjoyed plenty of coffee breaks and the convenience of going and doing as we pleased the entire time! Upon arrival in Port ... read more

...hiked around Machu Picchu? ...crawled around in a mine in Bolivia? ...stood on the largest salt flat in the world? ...sat in the sun on a lovely Peruvian beach? ...stood on the Equator? ...hung out at the Panama Canal? Anne and I were doing a lot of that last week, not just because we were maybe running out of things to talk about after being together 24 hours a day for 31 days in a row, but because we were realizing how many different, incredibly random things we did during our trip. Our last few days were spent in Quito and the other little towns I've already kinda described, including a quick trip to Otavalo on Friday to see their market that is to be one of the best in Latin America. And it was pretty ... read more

Hi, friends! You've just received an email informing you of how I've updated my blog. You may be thinking "What blog?" or "Why am I receiving this update?" or maybe you've thought nothing of it. But either way, I just wanted to explain what it's all about. As most of you know, since my days at language school in Cuernavaca over two years ago, I've become accustomed to blogging about my bigger travel adventures. And so I am preparing to do the same again here soon, using the same site as before. This time my tales will be about the month long trek Anne and I will be making through Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. And so in thinking that you might be interested in reading about our South American Adventure (either because you already told me ... read more
