Today was another driving day. We had an Airbnb reservation in Dodge City which was about 8 hours away. Karen always packed us sandwiches for our driving days so we didn’t have to take time to stop and eat. We also have a cooler if drinks and a huge bag of chips, snacks, and fruit. It not only saves tome but money.
One issue we have had a few times is the distance we travel on state roads with no businesses in sight. This presents a problem going to the bathroom. We experienced that on this day. As I predicted, once we took care of communing with Mother Nature we came upon a rest area about 10 miles down the road!!
Traveling after Labor Day is wonderful because schools are back in session and there are less people visiting various destinations. The one drawback is that most attractions return to their winter hours after Labor Day. This was the case with Dodge City. The one place we really wanted to visit, Boot Hill Museum, closed at 5 pm. We didn’t get there until 5:30.
Terry and I love westerns. I watched westerns as a kid because my dad
lived westerns and cop shows. Terry and I live Gunsmoke and have watched about every episode more than once. Gunsmoke was set in Dodge City. That’s why we wanted to visit.
We went to the Boot Hill Museum Gift Shop as it was still open. It was very high priced and we were disappointed. We asked for suggestions for other places to visit but there were none bathe visitors center was closed. There was not a brochure about Dodge City anywhere!
We left and headed to our Airbnb for the night. Now I’ve stayed at a lot of Airbnb’s over the past 5 or 6 years. It’s just like any hotel or vacation home, there’s always some risk involved. You read reviews, look at pictures, then make a selection.
Our host met us but we noticed another guy hurrying out of the apartment. The host explained to us that he had someone there worsting for bugs....specifically crickets. He said they just noticed an influx of them. Now that doesn’t bother me too much because I live in a house that has a lady bug problem in the winter. We unpacked our stuff and de used to go
to dinner. We killed a few crickets on our way out
We found a place to eat called Central Station Bar and Grill. It was set up to look like a train station compete with a boxcar in the middle. We found Mountain Oysters on the appetizer menu. None of us had ever tried them so we ordered them. They were delicious! Now if you don’t know what Mountain Oysters are.....look them up in the dictionary!!
Following dinner we returned to our apartment. I killed 8 crickets in my bedroom. Karen killed some in hers. Ed killed them in the bathroom and living room. This was a problem, but when I pulled down the covers and found them in the bed I decided we’d have to leave. It’s the first Airbnb I have ever left. I contacted the bar and he was very apologetic. He refunded our money that night and we found a hotel room. He also informed e pulled the listing until the problem was solved.
Now I tell you this long story about the Airbnb because when we checked in at the hotel i found two brochures about Dodge City. I learned there were
statues of Matt Dillon (James Arness), Doc Holliday, and Wyatt Earp. There was also a Gunsmoke street. I was going to leave Dodge City sorely disappointed because I thought they had no tribute to their western history. Even though I was anxious to get started early the next day, I was excited to see these new found sites!
So I’m thankful for the cricket invasion or we might not have known about some of the things to see in Dodge City.
