It was a beautiful morning as we pulled out at 10:00 heading south on I-35. We could just have dropped on down I-35 S to your house Laura...except you aren’t home!! We came the last few days from areas that were indeed “the land of 10,000 lakes” to vast fields of very flat land which then morphed into gently rolling hills full of prosperous looking farms. Our first stop was at the Iowa Welcome Center, and what a welcome stop it was! You can tell by the pictures that it is indeed unusual and the folks that worked there were tops. Thursday, Star Date who cares. Charles Lake to Waterloo “I can’t drive 55!” Sammy Hagar - “if only” jss Actually this was a great day. We got up early anticipating the longest day of the week, 82 miles. Fortunately we found a short cut to our hosts, the Kimball Ave. Methodist Church, which made it 73 miles. We left Charles City and essentially heading south all day. The first two towns were 19 miles and then an additional 22 miles. Parkersburg was the second and the “meet up” town for the day. Each day there is a designated town where teams can have their support people meet them and or it is the place where everyone stops to party. Saw two guys riding the old fashioned bikes today. It was wonderful to have Sara Jo, Nathan and Breanna here for two weeks. We were able to take Nathan to the Waterloo Playhouse and the Museum in Dubuque which he really enjoyed. He fell in love with Papa and wanted to go with him everywhere. It involved transferring the car seat from car to car, but it was worth it. Breanna won everyone's heart with her smile. Needless to say we miss them.... read more
