Day 1Christoph Hall Tour word of the day: Masturbatorium (not sure how that one came about) Beverage of the Evening: Sierra Nevada So here we are on another tour. We have the same crew as last time (Myself, Brian, Laurie, Martin, and Edward). The Nebuchadnezzar has been getting quite a workout this year touring. 20,000 miles in 6 months. As seems to be the standard, Brian along with his girlfriend Julie, spent the days up to departure working on the bus. At 350,000 miles it's showing some battle scars but is running strong. Finding Vegoil in Minneapolis this time was a bust for the most part but we did find enough to get us to Chicago. We were in the bus for only about 10 minutes when the same old jokes surfaced. We enjoyed a breakfast ... read more

Today we visited Shedd's Aquarium. Nothing we haven't seen before but always entertaining. Highlights: the penguins (HAPPY FEET!), sea otters (they were playing together and making everyone go ohh and ahhh), beluga whales (there was one who was such a camera ham. He would go up to the people, stick his head out of the water and start making sounds), the seadragons (they look so cool-google them if you've never seen them before), and of course the dolphins (Sea World is better of course but Shedd definitely put on a good show.) We had lunch by the lake. You wouldn't believe how windy it got. I was so cold I got goosebumps (then again, I'm cold a lot of the time.) It was peaceful and serene and the perfect place for a picnic. We took ... read more

Hey! I'm in Chicago right now and the traffic is crazy! Makes you appreciate all the room and space we have back home. But the weather is fantastic: warm and not a cloud in the sky. I laugh at all of you down in Texas there in the rain! Anyways it's been pretty fun. On the first day we walked through what felt like all of downtown Chicago. Just walking and walking. My feet were sooo sore, but there were some pretty cool sights (it'll NEVER compete with New York though!) like Sears Tower, the place where they make the Chicago Tribune newspaper. Then we had lunch at the 95th floor of this huge skyscraper. The view was terrific. It's a good thing heights don't scare me too much or I would have been hyperventilating. ... read more

I picked Cay up and we headed out to Kewanee because I had spotted a Java Hut: oh, the luxury of a lattee!. It was an interesting place: the girl at the counter asked if wanted to tan, to get a haircut, or???? How ingenious to have a day spa, tanning, hair, piercing, and tattoo salon with a coffee bar: and the receptionist was wearing a pirate eye patch..... Oh, if only I would have had more time, energy, and money! ( I am not making fun of a disability-she had poked herself in the eye, or something about her contact lens, but it did make a really odd first impression.) We headed out to Elmira where Cay had many family memories: her grandfather had his medical practice in the tiny little house across from the ... read more

Today is July 4th, my first Independence Day here in the US. My friends and I have barbeque and loads of other grilled stuff by the lake here in Evanston -- my new-found "hometown". (What is it with barbeque here in America? I also remember having picnic here on another holiday called the Memorial Day. Anyway,....) There are so many people by the lake... immigrants and non-immigrants. As I walk by the lakeshore, looking for my friends fanning the coals of their barbeque grill, I hear people speaking in all sorts of languages -- some Indian language, Arab, Spanish, ofcourse English, and finally Tagalog. All afternoon, an orchestra have been playing country and jazz. At past 9 pm, only did the fireworks start because that's only when it's dark enough to appreciate the fireworks display. Since ... read more

Okay, now I know about humidity. We had thunder, lightning, and downpours today. It cleared mid-morning and I went to the graveyard to take pictures and just have some time to spend alone. By the time I walked from my car to the row of Maxfield tombstones, I was totally drenched, I would say in my own sweat, but I think that women are supposed to "glow." Anyway, despite the fact that I felt that I was carrrying around my own personal sauna, the overcast sky created good light for pictures. I would get the picture all set and then, out would come the sun and destroy the good lighting. It went on like that for quite a while, but I did finally get some good images. Of course with my directionality impairment, I had ... read more

Did you know that Bobwhite Quail actually say "Bob White, Bob White, Bob White"? And did you know that they start saying "Bob White" at about 6 AM? It is actually a surprisingly wonderful way to wake up-even though my body thinks that it is 4 AM. It was also hard to sleep much longer when I realized that today would probably be the most important genealogy day of my trip. Today, I was going out to the old house on the Maxfield land-now owned by someone else- to see if we could identify it against the picture that my second cousin Richard had sent to me. I had been in touch with the Stark County, Illinois Genealogical Society and corresponded with the master of genealogical information, Don Schmidt. My trusty side-kick, Cay, and I ... read more

We travelled out to the land where the Maxfield School had once been. The master of genealogy, Don Schmidt, told me that under all the overgrowth there was a slanted top rail on the fence. He would walk to school-by this time his family had purchased the school as their home-trying to balance on that top rail. The field is now planted in soy beans. Don's mother, Dorothy, joined us for lunch and told us stories that she remembered about my family. It turns out that my Great Uncle Ulysses Grant Maxfield was the first grade teacher of Don's dad. Now, this was a peculiar choice of vocation for my Uncle Grant, who had once shot another man in a land dispute; but I would imagine his reputation would help to maintain order in his ... read more

Peoria to Indian Creek Vineyard and the Chateau I made it to Peoria and my luggage even arrived in the general time frame that I did. I had to wait around for it a bit, so the ticket counter lady gave me a couple of food vouchers: every time I turn around, someone at Delta is giving me a food voucher. Shortly thereafter, sitting in The Hangar (I believe it was called) restaurant and surveying the fine list of deep fat fried or red meat selections, I realized that I am going to be starting a serious diet when I return home. Of course, when I retrieved my suitcase, I realized that I needed all the calories of a deep-fried battered fish sandwich because of all the books that I had packed and would now ... read more
