My Route to The Great White North

All Ready to Leave on a Frosty Sunday Morning.
This weekend was supposed to be an overnight in downtown Chicago to celebrate my sister-in-law Kim and my 60th birthdays. Unfortunately, Jan's younger sister, Dawn came down with abdominal pain which the doctor thinks could be her gall bladder. Here's hoping it's something very minor. So, instead of a weekend of partying with Jan, her 2 sisters and the guys, I'm leaving a day earlier than my planned Monday departure.
This will allow me to beat a forcecast light snow here for Sunday night into Monday. The worst part of beeing a snowmobile junkie is having to drive long distances in the winter with all of the crummy weather that comes with it. Fortunately, now being retired I don't push on in bad weather since I really have no deadlines to meet. It sure makes the travel less stressful.

This will be the first winter in 5 years I haven't been in the UP for the December 1st opening day of the snowmobile season. That's because they didn't start getting that great Lake Superior LES (lake effect snow) until Friday. They recieved about a foot of snow Friday and the forecast is for possible LES for the next week and even a possible system snow storm Wednesday. I'm hoping for one of those special trips I've had in the past where they get 2-3 feet of snow while I'm there and I'm one of only a few people up there. We'll see.

I'll be staying at Krupp's Resort in Twin Lakes at the southern base of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Richard and Sandy Krupp are the long time owners of the resort and are great supporters of snowmobiling, Richard having been a past president of the Michigan Snowmobile Association and very active in the Superior Snowmobile Club, helping them with all the outstanding trail work they do. Their club's trail grooming is probably the best in the snow belt. They are also very friendly, accomodating people and I look forward to seeing them again every year.

It's currently 8:30 AM and I'm searching Itunes for audiobooks to listen to on the trip. I've just bought one, "Charles Kuralt's America," in which he travels to 12 favorite places in America, one per month for a year. It's only 4 1/2 hours so I'm going to see about one more. I sure get going a little later on trips these days...I probably won't get on the road till near 10:00. I hope to have another update tonight or tomorrow morning.
