It is no doubt that winter in Chicago is punishingly cold. The windchill, like knifes, cut through your skin without any mercy. The lake looks arctic. Snow storms, icy roads....... But, I've always found ways to enjoy winter in Chicago. This year is no exception! Christkindlemarket Christkindlemarket, located at the Daley Plaza, has been a Chicago holiday tradition since 1996. Decorated lavishly with red and green lights, snow flake ornaments, it was hard not to let the giant Christmas tree caught my attention. Daley plaza looks nothing like a usual serious courthouse. An old gentleman, in his black wool scarf, was sitting on the side of Randolph street playing accordion holiday music. Children and adults were waiting in line impatiently to get into the "Sweet Castle" to grab those European candies and chocolates to satisfy the ... read more

My most recent trip to Chicago, the third and sadly last. This time was a two day extravaganza that went into Thanksgiving Day. This resulted in seeing the Thanksgiving Day parade! PS. For those reading along, the titles of my blogs are lyrics from Frank Sinatra's "Chicago".... read more

Sometimes I wish I were 18 again, looking to backpack across Europe after high school, or even 22, traveling after college. A lot more goes into a RTW trip when you are 33, married, and a professional. Gone are the days of asking if I can store my worldly possessions in someone’s closet. Instead, for those of you readers who ever consider doing this some day, and particularly for those who are more established (read: crazy for taking a year off) these are some of the considerations we have taken into account before doing this trip. The age comparison also comes into play when you consider that an 18 year old probably saves a few thousand dollars and heads on their way vowing to sleep in dorms or train stations, and eat beans from a can. ... read more

Hallo vrienden vriendinnen families!

Proud to say that I have been to the city of our future President. I've never felt like I had something in common with a President before, but I feel I can relate to his upbringing as he once said that "a man is either trying to live up to his father's expectations or is trying to make up for his father's mistakes." Paraphrased Hard copy Journal Entry 101708: In route to Chicago, home of our future-to-be President Barrack Obama, I hope. Never been to the Windy City and I look forward to it. I will be there for eight hours so I gotta figure out where to go and get to know the city...I wonder if they have a subway system like New York City?...I think I brought too many books and as I'm eating ... read more

...that so proudly we hail "democracy has new meaning". Alas, the unreasoning distaste for America (fuck you) can now begin to fade. To which nation can we now direct our only slightly illogical ire. The relief I feel at B.O's imminent move to the Whitehouse only serves to illustrate the deep discomfort having W in office had instilled over time. The sense of mis-direction and negativity, caused by his stewardship of part of all our destinys, has only become clear to me since news of Barack's succession. We've yet to discover what difference it will actually make, but instinctively it seems that the undiplomatic swagger, bluster and references to old wild-west signs saying "wanted dead or alive" will cease. Instead, we look forward to a more equanimous, thoughtful, persuasive entente. Suddenly the threat of catastrophe seems ... read more

What can be said besides...amazing! If you are black or white, man or women, democrat or republican, American citizen or other nationality it did not matter on Tuesday, November 4th in Chicago's Grant Park. History happens every day and to be there when so many people were celebrating history happen was something words are hard to describe. It has taken me a few weeks to post this entry since the evening mainly because I still have not found the right words to describe the feeling in the air. While on business, I met a few friends in Chicago on Tuesday, November 4th. For weeks before the election the polls predicted Senator Barak Obama would become the next president of the United States. We anticipated the victory when we were there, but it was something that the ... read more
