Wowo… Today was quite the day. We got up and headed out of town pretty early, on our whopping three hour drive. First, though, we had to stop in another town for Starbucks since there are NO coffee shops in Rexburg. Once we were fueled up (thanks to Kyle for buying), we got going. We drove through Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve on the way, and it certainly looked like craters of the moon. It was kind of cool. For miles and miles just black rocks and scarce vegetation trying to grow unsuccessfully. I was also in awe of God’s creativity and how we can be in the middle of the mountains, then completely flat plains, and rivers and trees and crops and moon rocks, all within a few hours of driving. Where there was plant life, the autumn colors were b-e-a-utiful! It also made me smile thinking about the country we live in. Sprawling metropolises like Spokane, and then you can drive for miles and see absolutely no sign of life. Just nature.
I got a bit of reading done, though not as much as I would have liked, and we all read a physics lesson
together. (In the spring, Sarah kept thinking I was a physics major for whatever reason, so I got her a book of 50 physics things everyone should know. We try to read one every drive.) Today we read about Newton’s color theory (I picked it!) Then I fell asleep for the last hour of the drive, and boy was I out! Speaking of sleeping: Last night, I stayed awake until only Kyle and Sarah were there, and I made it through a few pillow fights even. Then I conked out. Both Kyle and Sarah commented this morning on the depth of my sleep; Kyle even hit me with a pillow again after I fell asleep and I didn’t move in the least!
We had lunch in this great little local joined called The Kneadery. Yum! They had a stuffed bull moose head on the wall, and just a few yards from that was a bull cow! It was huge! They also had other animals and a large bear. We wandered the streets of this little resort town and found a chocolate shop and some fun gift shops. Hopefully we’ll get to see more of the town tomorrow.

This might be my favorite pic from today show was in a church. Yikes! It was a great church, fairly new building and such, but still not nearly what we needed. It was interesting. They had no wireless mics and we used the entire Choir sound system. There was little-to-no backstage space and only one dressing room. They had no ClearCom and only 12 lights (literally!) We almost cut video too.
We got it all to work though; did the best we could with what we had. I actually ran the whole show with only 7 lights- the rest were PARs and PARnels and washed the screen too much. One special DSC, one on the drums, another on the adults, and a few to wash the stage. Wowo. The show went pretty well- Jenn and Liz going nuts offstage trying to dress 26 kids in a small room; Sarah running video; Kyle doing sound; and I was doing lights, of course. My favorite part of the show was during Runyege, the courtship dance at the end. The kids entered from upstage, so the singers are singing and then we saw a hand come through the upstage right curtain giving a big thumbs up that the dancers were
ready to enter. Sarah and I were rolling!
Before sound check, I had some free time and went on a wander. It was beautiful! Fall is in full bloom here! It was one of those days when I really wanted to be someone who takes great pictures and was reminded that I just am not. That’s not one of my skills. Maybe it will be something I learn one of these days. But I certainly gave it a good shot, so I’ve included a few of my photos. I know Sarah took some great ones, and I bet Kyle did too.
Like I said, the church was beautiful. Probably less that 5 years old, and if you looked out the sanctuary windows to the left, there was a picturesque view of the river and some trees… beautiful! The church only held a few hundred people, so the pews looked tiny. But out in the foyer they had fun stained concrete. We should try that sometime! A nice brown sugary amber maybe?
To top the night off, the fire alarm went off during load out. A fire truck even came! Everyone just kept working though, and Kyle found
us all ear plugs so we could function. Tomorrow, we have a school show and have to get up ridiculously early. But we’ll have all afternoon off to vege… and do laundry. I had to break out the spare underwear!
