CAMAS MEADOW The people thought they were safe from pursuit when they reached Montana and they could live peacefully among the Crow. Generals Sherman and Sheridan thought differently though. Indians who could defeat the army and make the army look foolish needed to be hunted down and destroyed. On August 9 the people were attacked at Big Hole by new soldiers led by John Gibbon. He was driven back to hide in some trees and put under siege until the people could break camp and escape. Still it was a costly fight for them. Many were killed or wounded. The retreat took them through Bannock where they hoped to trade for medical supplies, but the terrified miners would not come out to trade. Gibbon slunk back to Fort Shaw with his bushy tail between his legs. ... read more

Started out the door by 10am with a plan of what to see from the campground hosts. W headed first to Big Springs and Johnny Sack Cabin. Big Springs is a Natural National Landmark And is one of the 40 largest natural springs in the world. It produces over 120 million gallons of water each day And creates the headwaters of the Henrys Fork of the Snake River which eventually creates Upper and Lower Mesa Falls (more on that in a bit). Truly amazing the see Gods handiwork and His provision for life in such an amazing way! Also at the springs location was a beautiful cabin built by German immigrant Johnny Sack in 1929. He was an artisan of woodworking and his cabin is truly representative of what his gifts were! He also built a ... read more

We left Provo at 9am and headed north on Interstate 15 driving through Salt Lake City, Ogden, and into Idaho. Driving through Utah on the 15 most of what we saw was "city" after "city"...not that scenic so were ready to leave this state. About 2 hours into Idaho just past Pocatello we stopped in the city of Blackfoot where we went to the "Idaho Potato Museum"!!! Such a cute little museum in an old train depot that tells the history of the potato, the growing process, the different types and grades of potatoes, the equipment used planting, harvesting and bagging the potatoes and the highlight (for Ryan I think) was the Guinness book of world records largest potato crisp (which is not the same as a potato chip) made by the Pringles Company! We also ... read more

So yesterday we were bored and decided to go for a drive. Sawtell Peak is actually the site of an FAA radar tower. If you are heading into Island Park, Idaho from the north on highway 20 take a right onto Sawtell road. There is an actual Subway shop on the corner. From there it's an easy 12 mile drive mostly gravel. There is a bit of ATV traffic but that's a given considering the area. When you are finished, stop and have dinner at one of the many great restaurants in the area. Two of our favs are Boondocks and Island Park Inn. The pics are a little hazy due to smoke from the wildfires.... read more
