I am definitely falling behind in my blogging, but I dont want to skip over Jen and my experiences on the Big Island of Hawaii because it was truly a brilliant time. The Big island is my current favorite out of all the places that I have been so far. I'm still hoping that jen fills in the blanks. So when we arrived on the Big Island, under the heavy influence of jen, we decided to rent a convertible (good call). We drove all over the island so having a convertible was a definite bonus! Lu'au - Jeff had secretly purchased tickets for a Luau for my first night on the Big Island (apparently everyone knew about it except for me). So shortly after jen and I arrived at Rainbow Plantation we put on our hawaiian ... read more

Aaaaa-loha, Well my friends, it has been a long time since I last updated my blog; and a lot has happened. I think that this first update will be for our time in Oahu only. Jen and I left for Hawaii on the 11th of January, spent the night in LA and then arriving in Honolulu, Oahu on the 12th. Upon arriving we were greeted at the gate by a Hawaiian girl who had lei's for both of us (a little surprise I arranged for Jen). The first night we stayed in a hostel in Waikiki, a pretty fun place that had a bunch of activities set up for its guests, but they only had room for us for one night. The rest of the time we stayed in a hotel called Big Surf. Which was ... read more

Hi all, Well, finally we’ll mention the news from Honolulu - now that the snailmail announcements have gone out and the cat is out of the bag! Dick and I were married in Honolulu last Thursday, Jan. 20 in Judge Reynaldo Graulty’s chambers. We have been planning this for several weeks, just a quiet wedding during our one day in Honolulu that didn’t involve a lot of fuss and bother. The agencies we contacted wanted to set up a flossy wedding complete with digging our toes in the beach sand at sunset with champagne and cake afterwards - exactly what we had in mind NOT. What we actually did was go with a group from the ship on a private shore excursion and tour arranged by our travel agent with lunch at a lovely country club, ... read more

Hi all, This is our last full day at sea before we dock in Honolulu tomorrow (Thursday). Quiet and restful, except for the sea which was a bit rough, though not as much as yesterday. Nobody is seasick so far as we know, probably because of the stabilizers on the ship. These are big "wings" that stick out on each side of the ship below the water line, that keep it from rolling from side to side. We can feel the ship plowing into big waves but it's just up-and-down with no rolling, which is probably what makes for sea sickness. The weather has been fairly good, just a brief thunderstorm or two. Dick has a couple of pictures to put here of the interior of the ship. It's very beautiful, with lots of carpet and ... read more

On our day in Honolulu we had lunch at very nice country club. We started with raw Fish, Tuna and Octopus. The Octopus was very tough. Next was a salad followed by a fish course and then desert. There was lots of Hawaiian music and a beauaful setting. We returned the 10 miles to the city and were dropped off at the Art Academe .We returned to the ship at about 4:30. There were other Events which ocurred that we will talk about in a few days. Dick... read more

Holiday time here, everyone is off and there was a big parade through the town. Nothing much to do but watch it and go to the beach, it's really cloudy today though and a bit windy. We leave today so spend some time packing up and that during the afternoon. It starts to rain really heavy about 5pm and we leave at 8pm, hope our flight isn't delayed as New Zealand is waiting for us, it's a night flight so we'll hopefully get some sleep.... read more

Today we took the bus to Pearl Harbour and visited the USS Arizona memorial, a pretty somber sight as you can imagine. The story of Pearl Harbour has always facinated me, so many stories, myths etc so we wanted to check it out for ourselves. There were tours from the hotel but a wifee told me we could get a direct local bus for $2, sorted, it was an hour on the bus but an interesting ride through downtown Honolulu, not the sort of images you see on the postcards, quite seedy really. Anyway we arrived at the memorial and had to check in all our bags and that, nothing is allowed in, I find these rules bizarre as there is no personal search so if you wanted to do anything you just strap whatever to ... read more

Another day spent lying on the beach, we rented a couple of surf boards for the morning and attempted to put our new learned skills in to practice, we quickly got tired of this though as it's a totally different ball game with no-one telling you what to do and that, here all the posers are just waiting for you to fall off, I traded our boards for a couple of lie-lo's and we were far more comfortable, I still tried to surf on mine while Fiona used it as a comfortable matress on the beach. It was roasting today, no clouds, little wind and nothing to do but lie there, we could really get used to this life I tell thee. Got a bit burnt so stayed in again at night, went to the shops ... read more

We went to Makapu'u beach today and 'learned' how to surf, I was a total natural, totally and naturally kept falling off as soon as I stood up, Fiona was a bit better but she wasn't going for the monster waves that I was going for, WIPE OUT!!! Fiona has a healthy fear of sharks, a fear that I add to almost every day by telling her that I think I just saw one, I never tire of it and she seems to get as scared everytime so it's all good, this makes her stay in easy swimming distance of the shore. Anyway, the surf lessons started with a skin tight wet suit induction, now I'm not the fattest lad in town but these things don't leave much to the imagination, I have been eating quite ... read more

It's still in the 80's today but a bit cloudy first thing, not to worry though we'd already decided to go for a trek up Diamond Head today, it was some Polynesian name but I can't remember or pronounce it so let's stick with the white man name. It's an extinct volcanoe and has a nice park and that around it, it's a fair trek from Waikiki so I'm glad Fiona made plenty on sandwiches, all in all it was nice to see but not a patch on the Dundee Law, now that's a volcanoe!! Stayed in at night with some beers and that, we're currently spending more that twice our budget but Fiona keeps assuring me that we'll save money in New Zealand, I'm starting to doubt it. ... read more
