23rd APRIL 2009 - DISAPPOINTING DAY IN HAWAII!!!
I woke up at around 8am. Nat was up too and feeling much better than yesterday. We had lots planned for our final full day - paddle surfing for me and a trip to Han.....Beach to snorkel and catch a glimpse of the sea turtles....it was going to be 'awesome dude' as the turtles on Nemo would say! It was not to be. The heavens had opened and the guy on reception said the rain was set for the day. No one had ever told us that it rained in Hawaii else we would have saved something like Pearl Harbour for a rainy day. I was gutted...my one goal of the week (paddle surfing) was not going to be accomplished! I know I am not made of sugar and that I wouldn't have melted in the rain but the sea was rough and it just would not have been as much fun with rain lashing in my face! Disappointed to say the least!
At 10am we phoned one of our friends from home for a chat. It was really nice to catch up a little though the 15 minutes we had just
Group Meal!!
Lovely night to finish off Hawaii!! wasn't long enough. Following the phone call we got chatting to a fellow traveller at the hostel. His name was James and he was from England. Easy to get along with had a similar sense of humour to us. He settled down to watch One Tree Hill with us. I wonder why he liked that programme...not for the compelling and rich storylines I am sure!!
At 11ish, we left James to the tv and went back to the room. After getting dressed we headed out in the rain to hunt for postcards. Postcards found and stamps purchased we meandered around the international market before heading back to the hostel for lunch! After lunch we headed to the internet shop and spent about 3 hours blogging. Real dedication to the cause and a good use of time on a rainy day!! Once our eyes were squarer than Sponge Bob we headed back to the hostel where we showered, changed and got ready to go out for tea.
We asked James to come and a couple more lone travellers joined us too (Ellen from England and Jeremy from Canada). At 6ish we headed to the 'All you can eat' buffet place on the corner. $11.95 pp. We got ourselves a booth and went to tuck in. Loads and loads of choices....too many really. Soup, salad, Italian, Chinese, roast dinner, Indian etc etc. My plan was to go for small plates so that I could try more things. I started off with a safe roast dinner though which was good apart from the Yorkshire puddings. There was nothing Yorkshire about them. They were more like a cake and I would not have been surprised if they didn't remove the leftovers, squirt cream on them and put them on the dessert table. James picked 2 up...bad move and he immediately regretted that decision!!
My second plate was Italian and garlic bread. Nice enough. Loads of banter cracking off around the table too. Everyone was really nice and easy to get along with. It was shame that we had only met them on our last day in Hawaii!. I was amazed when Jeremy tucked into a plate of cranberry sauce. No meat, no veg, just cranberry sauce! Whatever takes your fancy I suppose! We all squeezed in a third plate but were stuffed like turkeys at Christmas after that and none of us could move. We stayed in the restaurant chatting for ages and had a really good laugh. Jeremy was a man of useless facts, James was pretty witty and Ellen was a calming influence. We had a food break for an hour and then went back for dessert. Nothing heavy for me...jelly and ice cream! Felt like I was a child again and even had sprinkles and nuts on. Tasty! The chat continued and we had been in there for almost 3 hours before being advised that the restaurant was about to close. I think we had outstayed our welcome!
Back at the hostel we all cabbaged in front of the tv. No good films on and so we watched a couple of episodes of Family Guy followed by a couple of episodes of Scrubs. That took us to midnight which was late enough for Nat and I. We said good night and took ourselves off to bed. I had really enjoyed my evening and it had been a good ending to a disappointing day!
