22nd APRIL 2009 - HANGOVER DAY SPENT ALONE & A SPOT OF SURFING!!
I woke up at around 9am...still tipsy from the night before. I went to the kitchen for my cereal and some water - always sorts me out - and then went back to bed for a couple of hours. Nat was dead to the world. At 11am I got up properly and felt fine and dandy! Nat stirred but she didn't feel so good. She came to the kitchen with me anyway in the hope that something to eat may do the trick. I tucked into another bowl of cereal and Nat tried to eat some bread. It didn't work and she trundled off back to the room to lie down. Oh dear...it looked like it was going to be one of her bad recovery days!
I stayed in the lounge area and watched tv, wrote my journal and generally chilled out. I was hoping that after another hour or so, Nat would come around and we could do something with our day. At 1pm, I went to check on her but she wasn't any better and couldn't get out of bed. I went back to the
Nice view!!
I didn't have any photos from today (poor effort but left valuables in room when went to beach) so just put this one on because I liked it!! tv room for another hour but after that I was fed up. Tv was boring and I had been in front of it for so long that a groove was beginning to form in the sofa where I had been sitting. I packed up my beach stuff and headed out.
The beach was busy again but findng a spot for one was non too hard. I perched near a group who had speakers and were playing music - save the battery on my ipod. Always thinking!! I was pretty tired from the late night and all I wanted to do was sleep, read my book and people watch. I wanted my 'me' time. Unfortunatley that was not to be as a guy (Tutone) from the group playing the music decided to befriend me. He kept on tring to chat and asking me questions about my travels and Hawaii and anything else he could think of. Even getting my book out did not give him the hint and so I took myself off and into the sea for a swim. I was in there for around 20 minutes before I came back to the shallows feeling all refreshed and much more sociable. Tutone and a girl from the group (Ali) were now in the water and began chatting to me again. I was less of a grouch this time and chatted away happily to them for a while before heading back on to the beach.
I had only been laid down for 10 mins or so when they came over and asked if I fancied going out surfing with them. I must have looked like a lost soul out there because they seemed to want to look after me. I refused at first and explained that I wasn't very good and could only really stand up and ride in. Tutone laughed and said that he was all on standing up most of the time. There was a big group of them and they had loads of boards. I eventually thought 'why not' and agreed. There were 4 of us that went out...Tutone, Ali who was like a pro and another girl called Kat. They were all really nice and it was good to be able to chat to some people rather than spend the day on my own. Surfing for free was a major bonus too!! I wasn't great but I did manage to stand up again and I had a lot of fun. I won't be giving up my day job in a hurry to become a pro surfer but it was just nice to do something other than lie on the beach. We were out for around 90 minutes before heading back in. Another dream fulfilled...surfed in Hawaii!! I stayed on the beach for another 20 minutes, got some good tips about Mexico and some scary advice about kidnapping, mugging and dodgy taxi drivers. I then said goodbye, thanked them for taking me out surfing and then headed back to the hostel to check if Nat was still alive.
Nat was still in bed and suffering...poor girl! I chatted to her for a while and then went and settled myself in front of the tv...back in the groove I had made earlier. Batman Begins was just starting and being one of my favourite films I could not miss the opportunity to watch it. Good viewing and it drew quite a crowd as fellow travellers came to the sofas to join me. Once the film had finished I nipped to the supermarket for Nat some soup and myself some fruit. I made Nat her soup and took it to the room for her before heading out again to the internet to do some blogging. The internet was unsucessful as the blog site was down and so I headed back to the hostel again. Nat's soup had gone down well and she felt a little better. About time really as it was 9pm. She got out of bed and we went to see if there were any more films on. Caught the end of Catwoman...rubbish film! Nat had regained her appetite by the end of the fim and fancied a burger. We had a walk to McDonalds where she stocked up on a quarter pounder meal and then strolled back to the hostel. We watched a spot more tv and then went to bed. It would be our final full day in Hawaii tomorrow and I was looking forward to paddle surfing (fingers crossed) and seeing a bit more of the island.
