24 & 25th June ’12 Kailua-Kona For the first time we actually managed to visit a couple of places and learn a bit about Hawaiian culture. On the first day we headed north along the coast highway past lots and lots of lava fields. For miles there were various names and dates picked out in white stones, at first I thought they were memorials and some may have been but the majority turned out to be a kind of graffiti saying things like Gazza loves Shazza (only with more Hawaiian sounding names). We were heading to Pu’ukohola Heiau – The Temple on the Hill of the Whale, a war temple which was built 1790-91 by the Kamehameha l , who became the King of the Islands. Prophecy told that Kamehameha was destined to rule all the ... read more

21st continued… Once again it’s raining! But not to be deterred we arrive at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and called at the visitor’s centre, looked at the exhibits and picked up a map of the crater drives and look outs. We also found out that due to volcanic activity you cannot drive right the way round the Kilauea Volcano anymore, but the lookouts were still open so off we went to find them. Our first stop was at the end of the road, at the Jaggar Museum which has fabulous views over the Kilauea Caldera. This is a vast area of old lava flows and the Halema’uma’u crater which was smoking away. It was a great site, not as impressive as Mt. Bromo on Java, but great never the less. It had also stopped raining, ... read more

20th June ’12 Maui to Hawaii – The Big Island Well what an exciting start to our visit to the Big Island! We dropped the hire car off and when we were on the shuttle to the airport the driver asked us which airline we were travelling with, when we said Go! He just started laughing. He then said ‘have you flown with them before?’ yes we said, as we had from Kauai to Maui and ok it was a small plane (48 seater) but so what… he then went on about the high winds we had been having and said ‘oh you’re in for a treat’, we just looked puzzled. Our ‘terminal’ was a sort of a shed away from the main building and when we walked in there were only a handful of people ... read more

Geo: 19.7297, -155.09Today we arrived in Hilo Hawaii! We woke up around 7 and went out on the balcony. It was a nice day with some low clouds but we were able to see the island of Hawaii in the distance. We were set to dock around 9:30 so we still had a little while before we arrived. We met the girls at Beach Blanket Buffet for breakfast at 9:00. By this time we were alongside the shore line. It began to rain pretty hard. Since Hilo is the rainiest city in the world, this was expected. Hilo receives on average 120" of rain per year. The ship docked early but it took a little while for the local officials to clear the ship and they sounded the all ashore at about 10:30.Our shore excursion was set ... read more

Aloha, April 2012. Last cruse before ending on the my 3rd contract with Celebrity Cruises onboard sweet Century. Port of call - Hilo, The Big Island of Hawaii. Before visiting Big Island, I had never thought of it as a quintessential destination. For some reason, tropical islands always seem so small and compact in my head. We were party of four, the Balkan gang again (Lana, Ante, Vedran and myself). As soon we walk out from the ship none of us was sure what exactly to do. The mega attraction on Big Island is Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii's sole World Heritage Site. Another misconception I had in my head was that Hawaii, The bIg Island would be pretty much beaches and palm tress all around. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find out the destination is ... read more

On Sunday, March 25, Tom and I took a short flight from Honolulu to Kona on "the Big Island" of Hawaii. Our first impression upon arrival was that we were landing on the moon! This is because the airport is built on a huge field of lava that gives it a bare, moon-like, appearance. We discovered that Hawaii is an island of 5 volcanoes, 3 of them now extinct. Kilauea is still very active, and because of this, smoke, or what the locals call "vog"( volcano smog), covers the southern part of the island, as you'll see from the photos.(Note: There are 50 photos in all, so please scroll down to the bottom of this page and go on to subsequent pages to see them all.) We also learned that the island is very agricultural, growing ... read more

The Big Island? I suppose it's all relative and in respect to the rest of the Hawaiin chain, The Big Island is mammoth, large enough to become the namesake island for the entire state. In reality, Hawaii is barely a small fraction the size of Tasmania but let's not become too bogged down with semantics. Having said that and whilst firmly brandishing my poisoned pen, if your sole exposure to the Big Island was Kona, you may be tempted to bestow another monicor, something akin to "The Feral Island". Some may consider Kona's "colourful local identities" as unpretentious, others probably figure the spirit of Mount Druitt or The Bronx will never die as long as these folk maintain a pulse. Fortunately for the Big Island, she crams in a slew of alternative spicy attractions and was ... read more

We went to the Big Island of Hawaii in August 2011. It was our second trip to Hawaii, the first time 8 years ago when we went to Maui and Kauai. This time we were spending 10 days on the Big Island. It was a long flight to Kona from NYC with a stop over in LA. (I should add we were with a 2 year old who handled the flight better than the adults did). But there is nothing like the feeling of arriving in Hawaii. It really is a place all to it's own and one that I could live permanently. This was the review I posted on trip advisor when we came back! August 9th...arrived at 4:30pm after long fights from url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUrl?from=ShowTopic&url=%2FTourism-g60763-New_York_City_New_York-Vacations.htmlNYC and url=http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUrl?from=ShowTopic&url=%2FTourism-g32655-Los_Angeles_California-Vacations.htmlLA. It took me forty six years to find paradise, the sort of place that feels as comfortable as home, but is exotic to keep you interested. The big island of Hawaii is the island paradise among the archipelago that is the state of Hawaii, at least as far as I could judge. And who am I to judge? Oahu was crowded and overrun with cars, while the big island had fewer tourists on more space, and with more to do. The big island is a science nerd fest for me: snorkeling on the reef with tropical fish, an active volcano, telescopes on a very tall mountain, and a verdant rainforest, so I'll have to return to paradise sometime soon to take it all in again. You can only get to paradise by taking chances, and not ... read more
