Chickamauga Chattanooga NMP Chickamauga Chattanooga NMP Cloudland Canyon State Park January 4, 2010, Monday We began our trek to the “warm south?” We were a bit anxious leaving Pittsburgh on HA! The frigid weather followed us through WVA, and into VA. We stopped at a KOA in Wytheville, VA… with Electric (of course) and a bonus…cable. The overnight temps were about 10 degrees. This is indeed the coldest RV travel we have attempted. Our holding tanks are empty and winterized…thus no running water…just bottled water.
January 5, 2010, Tuesday On we continue through VA, into TN and onto GA We finally found the SP Cloudland. Now the name should have been our first clue… Cloudland… we are up very high and the weather is very cold. The propane heater and the electric heater help, but this vehicle is not designed or insulated for frigid weather. Layering and quilts were great, but Kel did not wear a hat and the rear window was covered with ice (inside) in the morning. OK so much for the weather.
January 6, 2010, Wednesday We awoke in Cloudland and had some
wonderful hot oatmeal and began our hike to the waterfall. It was a winter wonderland but Dam Cold!
Our first Civil War Stop was Chickamauga National Battlefield. This was one of the bloodiest battles… with 34,624 casualties!! Technically the success is listed for the Confederate Army, however, the Union’s return to Chattanooga opened the way for “Sherman’s March to the Sea”.
We drove to Red Top Mt SP for the night. The weather is a balmy 32, but we are due for snow tomorrow, and GA has no idea how to deal with snow…we will see tomorrow?!
