The Silver Comet Trail in North West Georgia
Text and Photos last updated: 2017
Number of times on this trail: 6 Location: NW Georgia
Distance: 61 miles (99 km)
Distance markers: miles and kilometres
Surface: asphalt and concrete
Width: 3 metres and more
Grade: Flat with a number of “slopes”
Conditions of trail: Very good
We first biked this trail in 2008 and it has taken 7 years (and a lot of trails in
between) to return to one of the finest trails that we have come across. It is one of
the (if not the) longest trail of its kind (when you consider the connection with the
Chief Ladiga in Alabama.)
The Petit Train du Nord in Quebec is the only one that
we know that compares to the Silver Comet.
The trail runs from
Smyrna (near Atlanta) to Esom Hill where it connects to the C
hief Ladiga Trail in Alabama. In general the further that you go from Smyrna the more
rural it gets. If I only had one choice I would like start at the Alabama border.
The trail has everything. Water, bathrooms, rest areas, towns for food and great
scenery. The trail is super smooth, either asphalt or concrete.
There are many, many trail heads with parking and many highlights. I am only going to list a few.
M
ile marker 1.2 Heritage Park at the corner of Fontaine Road and Nickajack Road in
Smyrna.
Mile 11.7 in Florence trailhead at highwy 278 and CH James parkway
At mile 14.7 in
Hiram trailhead at Homer Leggett Park has covered picnic area and an original caboose in the parking lot which is used as a headquarters
for the Siver Comet patrols (90 Seabord Street GPS: N 33.88271 W 084.75554)
At mile 22.2 Rambo Road Trailhead ha picnic tables and picturesque surroundings. The
750 foot long 126 feet high trestle is about .5 miles west of
Rambo (well worth a visit)
At mile 26 Will Springs Road
Wooden Trestle At mile 33.5 is the
800 foot Brushy Mountain Tunnel. At mile 37.6 the trail passes through the
Rockmart Trail Head and the Riverwalk Park. A good place for a stop.
At mile 44.8 the trail passes through several miles of farmland
At mile 51.4 The Cedartown Depot serves as a welcome centre.
At mile 61.2 it is quite, scenic and remote.
Chief Ladiga Trail and the state line is just ahead.
These are just a FEW of the highlights. You must bike the Silver Comet to truly enjoy it.
