Biking in Daytona Beach Florida (Circle Tour)
Biked 3 times in 2015 Like many of the beaches on the Atlantic side of Florida, the sand at Daytona Beach is hard packed. The sand is almost like pavement.
It is interesting to see large pickups and even bigger motor homes driving along the beach.
There are many public access points in Daytona Beach and parking on the beach is free.
Biking is best early in the morning. By late morning or afternoon there is usually a wind and it is great biking with the wind behind your back but a real
challenge going against it. Also check for high and low tides. At high tides you can still bike along the beach but it is not as wide.
I would suggest that you avoid the temptation to bike IN the water. If you do, you will later find a nice white film of salt all over your chain and bicycle parts.
For a bit more interesting, rather than just biking back and forth, you could try a
circle tour. I have done this
three times. The distance is approximately 40 km.
Start anywhere on the beach and go north or south. If going south, go as far as the
Dunlawton Avenue Bridge. Cross the bridge and turn right. The next
3-4 km are the LEASt interesting of the tour.
Going North there are 4 more bridges (all with safe sidewalks to bike on) and you can cross over anytime
If you go all the way to the bridge crossing at
Ormond Beach you will find the most interesting part of the ride, mostly through parkland. There are many
parks with both water, washrooms and benches. You will go by the town of
Holly Hill and finally
Ormond Beach where you can cross back over on the
Granada Blvd Bridge. On both sides there are lots of opportunities for food, water, benches etc.
Round trip is about 40 km. A suggestion is to go in the direction which will have the wind at your back when you are biking on the beach!!
Enjoy
