In ... read more

Was man evtl. über Athens wissen sollte: Take a hip trip to Athens, Georgia! A vibrant, restored Victorian-era downtown teems with art galleries, trendy shops, world-renowned nightclubs and distinctive dining. Historic architecture and impressive gardens complete the unique blend of traditional heritage and trend-setting southern culture. The vibe and energy that gave birth to R.E.M and the B-52's is alive and well today! In 5 ... read more

There is quite a bit that I left out in my blogs that needed some clarification and explanations. I would like to start and talk about the Costa Rican Life. After spending 5 weeks down at La Tortuga Feliz, I have seen and learned so many new and different things. The locals that surrounded us were friendly. They are normally shy and timid in nature, but are very fond of the women. They are always trying to persuade them to make them their girlfriends, give them gifts, smooth talk them, but they are also very respectful of them. They gawk at women in bathing suites but nudity is not allowed on the beach, and so they find that offensive. It is a small island so everybody knows everybody for the most part. The guides that we ... read more

The alarm clock went off at 4:45 a.m. This usually would not be a problem but I am currently on night shift at the PD and this is the time of morning that my body is getting ready for bed, not getting up. On top of that, this is the first out of state trip I have made on the bike since my accident and I was a little nervous; causing me to not sleep very well. I was scheduled to meet my friend Andy in Graniteville, SC at 7 a.m., which meant that I had to be on my way by 5:30. When I went outside to get on the bike everything was wet. It had been raining a good part of the night and I was glad that the rain had stopped. The weather ... read more

"Like a bat out of hell Ill be gone when the morning comes When the night is over Like a bat out of hell Ill be gone gone gone Like a bat out of hell Ill be gone when the morning comes When the day is done And the sun goes down And the moonlights shining through Then like a sinner before the gates of heaven Ill come crawling on back to you" The first song on the playlist I made for my drive to Athens was rattling the speakers of my 1996 Ford Ranger before I even left my neighborhood the afternoon of my departure and still conjures up the same feelings I had that day every time I listen to it. My family and girlfriend were given such short notice that they were shocked ... read more

On Saturday I finally got to eat at the legendary Weaver D’s. Weaver himself seemed to be in a grumpy mood, but the enormous serving of fried chicken was delicious. Neither Dave nor I could finish our lunch, but loved it. Sunday morning Dave was up ridiculously early to fly in the little plane from Athens to Atlanta to eventually end up back in LA. Pouring with rain at this stage, but apparently the flight went ok. I was surprised by more generosity from the choir at rehearsal, when Lyn presented me with a Braves cap and a Bulldawg shirt (and a practical gift for my trip - which may well come in handy if I get affected by any stomach bugs in India…). I will make sure I get a photo of me in the ... read more

Late-running flight from NYC to Atlanta on Thursday. Met up at the airport with Dave, who hadn’t changed a bit, except perhaps circumferentially. Out to dinner with Lyn and Roger for some lovely stuffed pork and asparagus. Off afterwards to the Globe for five or five pints. (I managed to stop Dave as he was ordering the shots…) On Friday Stephen very generously hosted a party at his condo and invited all my favourite Athens people. It was a good farewell gathering, with much laughing and great food. ... read more

The day of the first home game of the college football season. Streets of Athens are packed with Georgia Bulldog supporters. Thousands and thousands of fans from all over the state have come to see the game (the stadium seats about 100,000) and 'tailgate' beforehand (that's eat near their car, not drive too close). We were lucky enough to eat as the guests of Bob and Vicky Cain (Vicky sings in the choir) before Stephen went to the game, and I saw the opening ceremonies from the bridge overlooking the stadium. Spectacular display of marching bands and massed cheering. While the game was on the streets were deserted. UGA won in fine style.... read more
