I couldn't help but take note of the plane that skidded all over the runway at LaGuardia Airport this morning. Guess where my first flight on this big adventure lands - LGA! Maybe the snow and ice will be gone by then...
One of my last non-packing preparations for this trip was a a visit to the dentist this morning. No cavities! Now my teeth are all shiny and clean, and I can drink and eat whatever I feel like. They asked me if I drank coffee, because the only issues were some stains from dark liquids on the backs of my front teeth. Alas, I don't drink coffee, but I am addicted to sweet tea. And at that moment, I realized how much I'll be missing that for the 77 days of my trip. I went to Barberito's for lunch afterwards, and I think I'll be on a strict all-sweet-tea diet with my meals until I leave. I've uploaded a photo, in case I ever get lonely for sweet

I'm going to miss both of these things, too tea while I'm in Europe.
The dollar is continuing to do very well against the Euro - I think we're down to an exchange rate of about $1.10, which is quite favorable for Americans. It's the best rate I've ever seen since I've been travelling to Europe. Every week, I recalculate my hotel expenses, since I've reserved but not paid for most of them. It turns out, I saved another $70 yesterday, thanks to the favorable exchange rate! Sometimes, I wish I could lock that in, or just go ahead and pay for the hotels now, before the rate rises again. I can't imagine that it'll be increasing very much before I get over there, though, so I'll be thankful for what I have.
Speaking of being thankful for what I have, I'm really going to miss some of the kids that I work with at church. I work with them on Wednesdays and Sundays, and I found out last night that one of them, Carson, won't be here this Sunday, so it was the last time I was going to see him until June. His mom was kind enough to take some pictures of me, him, and another kid, who just happens to be named Will, too. Carson is on the left in the picture. Working with those kids has been a highlight of my time in Athens, especially now that I'm not a student at UGA. I will definitely miss them while I'm away.
Lastly, I would just like to say that I appreciate a hotel that gives you specific directions to their location from the airport, train station, or bus station. These places of business really understand how to make things easier for their patrons. That peace of mind is priceless. Even better are those who give you ideas for things to do while in town. Both of my Portuguese places sent me an individual email with attached documents on finding things to do while in town. One is a B&B; the other is a guesthouse. So,
not big-time hotels who could really afford to do something like that. Get your act together, hotels!
