Mileage 505
We picked up the van early from Hickory. The van was red, and we named her Scarlett. Even with a few hitches, we were on the road, quite early. Claire worked in the back while Susan drove. We hardly made it to South Carolina before Claire had her drinking problem. Her cup broke and we had to pull over and clean up the spilled drink. Our next stop was Edisto Gardens which contained a lot of lovely roses. We ate lunch on a bench in the serenity garden. Pam drove after lunch. We drove back roads because we were tired of the interstate. We dodged turtles, drove thru a tunnel of Spanish Moss, stayed out of the mosquito farms and were surprised to meet Forrest Gump when we got to Georgia. Of course, we had to make some pictures with him. We tried to stop to see the smallest church, but the sky opened up, so Claire pulled out her water proof camera and snapped a picture.

we found a lighthouse was a rundown building in the middle of nowhere. We reached the Florida visitors center, the one we wanted to see the most, at 5:15. Guess what time they closed? No map for you.
We got to the hotel (a Hampton Inn) in St Augustine and discovered that we could use mom’s gift certificate that we think is about 20 years old and at supper we dined at “Cap’s on the Water”. We saw a castle – we don’t know what it was – how you get to it – there are houses all around it, but it looks like a castle. After dinner the windows in the castle had blue lights in them and even looked stranger. We went back to the hotel and crashed as it’s been a long day.
