Yesterday we went to South Beach in Miami. Everybody knows South Beach Miami – the Art Deco hotels and the steroid-enhanced men and surgically-enhanced women parading on the beach and the drag queens! We expected it to be very tawdry and tacky but it wasn’t at all – another preconception destroyed by the experience of travel. It was a fun and interesting place to spend a day strolling the famous Ocean Boulevard and Art Deco District and studying the restaurant menus of the Esplanda Way (the best-looking of them closed on Monday) and browsing stores on the Lincoln Road (especially the ice cream store and the Books and Books store). Miami Our flight arrived in Miami at 1pm. We decided to hire a car as it seemed cheaper than a taxi from Fort Lauderdale to Miami South Beach. The taxi was approximately 80 dollars each way and there wasn’t an easy bus route. We forgot to include taxes, extra insurance and a sat nav so the car ended up costing about twice as much as the 40 dollars we’d planned for, yet it was still the best option. Plus Oli wanted to drive in America at some point. We caught the free shuttle to the rental cars and headed to Thrifty, as it seemed the cheapest. Well, figured while we still had a wi-fi connection today in Miami we would give you a current update on our plans. It looks pretty definite that our weather window is here! As a result the plan is to go over to a nearby marina this AM to top up the diesel and water tanks, pump out the head and then anchor nearby behind Fisher Island (near the Miami Government Cut). We will spend the night there and then early tomorrow AM we will shove off with 2 other boats heading to the Bahamas as well. We will get together with them this afternoon to do a final review of our charts and then hopefully get a good nights sleep.
