Geo: 25.7977, -80.2765After surviving the 9 hr flight from heathrow, a million security checks, bags collected and re dropped off we are sat on departures in Miami airport. The journey was reasonably uneventful apart from the couple infront of us ALL over each other for the entirety of the journey!!! Yuk!! Food was yummy for once and plenty of free drinks too! Watched 4 films and attempted to beat James at a few inflight games. He is way too competitive!!!!! Lol!!! Def sleeping on the next leg unless there are more good films!!! Now people watching some more... Americans are so blooming funny!! In the departure gate from Heathrow, there was a huge black guy, who was a pilot on his way home from flying cargo. He had a beat up, flyboy leather jacket and the ... read more

Thursday, January 19, 2012 Yesterday we had lunch with the senior citizens at the rec center. Mom sits with some real characters and we shared a lot of laughs. Mom and I had a marathon Skip-Bo contest most of the afternoon and until late last night. I’ve learned to play her version of cut throat Skip-Bo and we were pretty evenly matched. Today we went to Key Biscayne and Cape Florida State Park. The light house is still pretty, even though Kerry complains that it isn’t supposed to be painted white, preferring the natural brick from his youth. The beach was nice and not very crowded. Of course it is a weekday. We enjoyed walking on the beach and the breeze and sunshine made it a perfect day weather-wise. On the way home we drove past ... read more

Monday, 16 January, 2012 This morning we closed up the camper and walked down to the river. Hillsborough River SP is a beautiful place, the river is placid by the campground, yet has rapids on the other side of the park. We will probably come back here to spend more time, maybe rent a canoe and enjoy the river. We drove south then east, hating the traffic through Brandon and environs. We were happy to finally reach the farm areas in the central part of the state. We saw fields of strawberries and cabbages and other crops we didn’t recognize. We turned south at Yeehaw Junction and once past Ft. Drum, turned back west to Kissimmee Prairie Preserve SP. It is literally out in the middle of nowhere, a birder’s paradise, I hear. The campground was ... read more

Thursday morning we left Shell Key and continued up the ICW through the waters of Florida Bay bearing names as colorful as the greens and blues of the waters themselves: Cotton Key Basin, Buttonwood Sound, Tarpon Basin, Blackwater Sound, Barnes Sound, Little Card Sound, and, finally, Card Sound. We skirted the boundary of Everglades National Park, which extends way down into Florida Bay until we reached Jewfish Creek, where the NP boundary turned north to run parallel to US 1. We traversed the sometimes narrow passes and cuts: Steamboat Channel, Cowpens Cut, Ramshorn Cut, Baker Cut, Grouper Creek, Dusenbury Creek and Jewfish Creek. At the north end of Card Sound, within sight of Biscayne Bay, we dropped our anchor. The wind was moderate, but forecast to calm and change direction, but instead intensified, and our anchor ... read more

Since my last blog we’ve had quite warm weather. I’m not complaining, mind you, especially to those of you who are again enduring snowy weather. I’m just saying that it has become warmer and more humid, and a little less breezy at times. We ride our bikes to the grocery every 2 or 3 days, and are soaking wet by the time we get there and back. Riding to eat supper at one of the restaurants isn’t so bad, as by then the breeze has usually picked back up, the sun is much lower, and the temps are a bit cooler. We’ve had 2 softball games since we last spoke. Sara, Trevor, and Kerry all played in spite of aches and pains. Kerry has had a pinched nerve or something in his back, but always manages ... read more
