The flight from Panama City arrived at Fort Lauderdale in the early hours coming from inland and not asI had hoped via the coast, passing Miami on the left. In the lobby of the Hollywood airport I checked hostel world and saw that all the hostels were fully booked! i later learned this was most likely due to a beach party that weekend. Not knowing what to do and not wanting to waste valuable 'tanning time', I picked up all my gear and got on a Broward county bus to the beach, as I had done 9 weeks before. I took this bus farther north this time however and got off Galt Ocean Drive where I parked all my gear on the beach, settled in next to a fenced of area where a turtle had chosen to lay its eggs and basically was there all day.
I only left once, leaving my stuff guarded by a lady I met on the beach to get beers and snacks.
By then I had decided to save the little money I had left anyway, and sleep those coming nights at the airport. Free internet and pretty quiet at night, so ideal really and
saving $25 a night on a hostel!
So after stuffing my face full of junk food (hey, I was in the US again...) I took the last bus back to Hollywood where I drank a few beers while watching planes (Perfect combination I think) and
contemplating my Central America trip;
I decided Panama, El Salvador and Guatemala were my favourites, in that order. Panama was just so green, so lush with good infrastructure and a nice looking capital. El Salvador very similar, green and lush and I reckon a lot of hidden treasures I'd love to come back to explore one day. Guatemala was just great, spent by far the most of my time there (20 days). Wanna come back to do the north west one day. I loved the people who were just fantastic, the art and culture and heyho, I know few people will agree with me, but I liked the capital too...
The next day I spent the whole day at the beach, starting to look like a spray tanned Tom Jones,comlete with speedos. Hung out at exactly the same spot I started my trip, at the bubba gump shrimp. Ate the same great salad
Fantastic bacon, ham and cheese salad
@ a little cafe next to a Greek place, I had this same salad when I started my trip.. (see photo) again which felt like a way to finish this voyage, just like I had started it.
Slept at the airport again and realized I started memorizing the announcements made on luggage proportions etc. That was slightly scary, I hadn't meant to become part of the furniture but for a moment there I felt I had. Oh well, the next day I was going o fly out anyway. Ofcourse I did spend the morning until noon at the beach again, and was very sorry to leave the great waves and sun (Fort Lauderdale is a great holiday destination, I recommend it!) and exchange it for the queues at the airport (and man, are they long!!)
And with my westjet flight taking off towards Montreal from where I had to reconnect to Toronto, my Central America trip had officially finished. As we flew along the eastern coastline (great views, regretted my broken camera so much at that moment) I promised myself to be back to this region one day...
