We were up early this morning. The complex has an onsite laundry so we did all our washing early so that we can have a suitcase full of clean close ready for the next leg of our journey. Not sure we will have the facility to do any proper washing for the next two weeks. Also don't know i
what Internet access we will have either.
We were originally planning to borrow a couple of push bikes this morning, but with the heat being about 30 degrees we decided a nice walk would be a better idea. We did a good few miles.
Our apartment is on a slither of land that is not joined to mainland Florida. The slither is about 4 miles long by about 200 metres wide. Access to the Island is over any of three draw bridges that rise regularly during the day. The bridge nearest to our apartment raises on the hour and half our during daylight hours. On several occasions we have seen the bridge moving, but it has been difficult to take any photos.
Thr drawbridge is normally raised for 5 minute only. Yesterday, we were at a level crossing fro 25
minutes for a train went by. USA trains are well known for being sometimes miles long.
We decided this morning that we would walk the three quarters of a mile to the bridge, and were lucky enough to get there just as it started moving. Got a couple of photos then a fellow American commented on the fact that it was good it was not a train. Trains in America tend to be several miles long and can take upto half an hour to cross over the road.
Once the bridge had closed again we began to walk over, at which time the same American pointed out a healthy wild iguana on the supports of the bridge. We thought at first that it was not real, but it then moved from one end of the support to the other. The iguana was about two foot long from the end of his tail to his head and was a very vivid green.
We wandered around a local shopping centre, then proceeded back over the bridge towards the sea and the apartment. The iguana was gone now.
We took a slight detour on the way home and walked
home along the beach. The area looks to be very upmarket and very well kept. One garden had got ready early for the forthcoming halloween celebrations. USA are really BIG into halloween in America.
Total distance walked was about 3 or 4 miles. Not bad in 30 degree temperatures.
As this was our last night, we decided that we would revisit one of the dinner venues already visited this week. We picked the Deli that we visited on Wednesday. Had a lovely last meal with them.
On the way home we ventured into an area of the Island that we have not made it to during our visit. We were surprised to see many tourist restaurants, shops and hotels. We much prefer where we are staying. It is a lot quieter.
