Maybe the irresistible magnetism of the flames that holds our gaze captive is the natural instinct to go back to the beginning. To the fire that started it all. Back to the simple life. Our trip to Cedar Key was exactly that; to go back to a simple lifestyle. This was a trip in which we couldn’t do what we planned but yet it was full of memorable moments. Our first day itinerary included a visit to the Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park that we couldn’t do because there was not enough time to visit the park and still get to Cedar Key on time to watch the sunset. The second day kayaking had to be cancelled too because of weather. So what was left for us was to enjoy the island and the people in ... read more

Pete’s Pier in Crystal River is a nice enough marina, not fancy by any means, but adequate. It’s about a mile to the nearest store, a Save-A-Lot, and the West Marine. Neither place holds a lot of excitement. But Kerry walked to both of them several times during our 5 days and 6 nights at Pete’s. The boat ramp at Pete’s is quite busy, especially on weekends. We were entertained somewhat watching people backing trailers down the ramp and loading and unloading boats with varying degrees of expertise. Add the strong west winds that came up every afternoon, and you have a few moments of drama. Saturday evening around dark, when it finally settled down, and the use of the ramp had dwindled, we were enjoying the quiet. We heard the unmistakable sound of squealing tires ... read more

Blessed? You bet. To be able to say "I'm going on a month-long road trip by myself," and actually begin it, is pretty COOL! My chariot, better known as the gypsy outhouse, was packed up with a little help from my supportive husband, and off I drove on February 1st. Destination #1 was Cedar Key Florida on the gulf coast about 45 minutes southwest of Gainsville. My friend Gail, who works for herself, was able to meet me for the first week. We picked a pet-friendly place to stay from the internet that we thought looked good and booked it. Gail's sweet doggie Gracie is our constant companion. Check out the Low-key Hideaway (tiki bar and all) at lowkeyhideaway.com Our hosts Pat & Cindy are great. We're splitting the cost of an efficiency and I'm really ... read more

We spent four nights in Steinhatchee at the Sea Hag, and we were all starting to feel a bit haggish. When we got up Sunday morning, the sky was red and cloudy in advance of the stormy weather. The rain started right around dawn, but didn’t last very long. The wind, on the other hand, did. We had 15 to 25 knot winds with gusts up to gale force for 2 days. Sunday afternoon we walked to Roy’s Restaurant, fighting the strong wind in our faces. We had wonderful seafood dinners, then waddled back. Having the wind at our backs made the walk back a lot easier. We were all so stuffed that none of us ate supper Sunday night. Monday we just lazed around (except for Trevor who did laundry.) It had turned cold overnight. ... read more
