We all enjoyed a decent lie in and I began to tackle some packing as today was our last full day :-(. Packed up some beers, stopped en-route for snacks and spent a few hours out at Fort Myers beach, followed by a bit of shopping for Kat who wanted to buy gifts for the kids.A final stop at Publix for a few more items for dinner, the plan was to eat the remaining food and drink the remaining drink (there was plenty of both!)Stage two of packing didn't go too well and we ended up taking Jon's kind offer to ship a box of our stuff to us later in the week as it would no way all fit into our suitcases!Cooked up all the food and ate as much as we good, finished the ... read more

A beautiful day to go sailing. Up early and straight to the boat office to fill in the paperwork and get all the info, Jon had sailed boats many times so he was our captain for the day!Follwed the lady to the house where the boat was kept, had a walk around checking it over and the sailed along the canal out towards the gulf.Kat and I relaxed in the sun, gazing at the amazing houses which lined the waterways.Passed through the lock and out into the gulf. Headed out towards Sanibel island, Jon opened the throttle and we sped out into the open waters. Dropped anchor just off the island and swam off the boat in the clear, warm waters.Jon and Kat swam to shore while Alex and I cracked open beers and kept charge ... read more

A quiet day planned for today, went online to see if the local Walmart had Gro Pros in stock and ordered one for collection. Reserved a boat for tomorrow to go out for the day with Jon and Kat who were arriving later. Bought more food for the bbq.Jon and Kat arrived around 7pm and Jon was straight onto making Moscow Mules which went down well.Fired up the bbq and cooked a huge amount of steak, salad and salmon for me, a little too much wine was consumed, so had a quick dip in the pool before bed.... read more

A lovely hot sunny day so after breakfast by the pool, decided to go kayaking in the mangroves, don't think I've been in a kayak since I was on an awful adventure holiday with the school when I was 14 but happy to give it a go! Tried to get a Go Pro to film the experience but Target didn't have the model in stock. After lots of assurance by the kayak guy that there were no 'gators in the mangroves, we packed our phones in a dry bag, donned our life jackets and paddled out towards the gulf.We had chosen a tandem kayak so I was in the front and Alex behind. The gulf was fairly calm apart from when boats sped by causing a wake, less concerned for my own safety and more for the ... read more

A bit cloudy first thng so decided to put kayaking off until tomorrow and head to the mall. Had tea by the pool and hit the road for the half hour journey. We had been to the Miromar outlet mall before so knew where we were going. Spent the next few hours buying essentials and non-essentials and a few gifts for friends. Managed to grab a bite of lunch before round two. Some great bargains to be found especially in the Converse store, I could have bought half a dozen pairs but bearing baggage allowance in mind had to settle for two! When asked my name in two stores was treated to renditions of songs by Adele the theme started four hears ago in California and seems to continue each time I visit the US so ... read more

Got up early and enjoyed tea and breakfast by the pool before going out to explore the area. Looked at the suggestions on the sat nav for odeas where to go. First in the list. was a place called Bunche beach so thought we'd give it a try. Stopped into Target to pick up a few things we neded, socks for Alex and new Fitbit bracelet for me, decided to grab a take out lunch to eat on our travels. Bunche beach turned out to be a pretty location with shallow waters way out into the ocean on the edge of a natural park. The beach also had an interesting history as one of the first beaches black people were allowed to use before the days of racial equality. Decided this would be a good place ... read more

We happened upon the Cape Coral's Oktoberfest from an ad in "The Pine Island Eagle," our entertainment bible when we camp here. The event is well organized and seems to be run by a huge cadre of volunteers in drindles and leiderhausen selling tickets (you can't use money to buy your brats and beers), cooking potato pancakes, pouring beer and wine and parking cars. It's an enormous effort held annually on the last two weekends of October. The German American Club owns the huge indoor/outdoor venue at 2101 Pine Island Road, Cape Coral. We've passed it often; but this was our first actual visit. The festival is crowded and raucous. If the hoi palloi bustle of the big tent or the large picnic area proves overwhelming; sit-down dinners are served in von Steuben Hall. The von ... read more

Matt's and my good friend Cara, decided that she wanted to celebrate her 25th birthday with fun in the sun during a Cape Coral weekend getaway. Directions We were more than happy to attend! From West Palm to Cape Coral, we opted to take I-75 which took us a little under 3 hours despite a mini detour of getting lost. From Cape Coral to West Palm, we took Southern the whole way. Southern is a much more direct route, but also posed some issues with drops in speed since it cut through several central Florida towns. In the future, I would probably always take I-75 for the steady speed limit alone. Lodging Cara did her research in advance and opted to have us all stay at The Resort at MarinaVillage in Cape Coral . We booked ... read more

It is early December and despite the tropical weather, palm trees and wearing shorts every day, the signs of Christmas are everywhere. US Thanksgiving was last week - it seems that Americans move right into Christmas and lump the 2 together as "the holiday season." One of our highlights last week was chatting with an old tug boat captain who lives aboard his converted tug which was moored next to us in St. Petersburg. He had lived on the same street as Marlene when she was growing up in Sault St. Marie and remembered stopping in at the lighthouse on Michipicoten Island in the early '50s when they were there We are scouting out a suitable (affordable) marina to leave Gust O'Wind over Christmas as we drive back to Canada to celebrate Christmas with Kim, James, ... read more
